On April 5th, 1933, Americans woke up to discover that owning gold had become a federal crime overnight. Executive Order 6102 gave citizens less than a month to surrender their gold to the Federal Reserve or face up to 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine (equivalent to nearly $250,000 today).
But here’s what most people don’t know: the silver confiscation came next.
Executive Order 6814, signed on August 9th, 1934, required Americans to deliver their silver bullion to the U.S. Mint within 90 days. Approximately 113 million ounces of silver flowed into government vaults. Those who made a profit faced a 50% windfall tax.
