CHABAD / POSTVILLE AND BEYOND / PART 1 AND PART 2
(Chabad Lubavitchers)
Interviews here are with over 20 people (some scholars, some local Postville people) regarding Chabad in general or their dominating — albeit self-segregating — colony in the rural town of Postville, Iowa, as well as their influence on the world stage, including upon heads of government — from Donald Trump to Vladimir Putin. The interviews and scenes (in Postville, Iowa, and Crown Heights, New York, where Chabad is headquartered) were recorded in 2010. Some interviews in the same year were with others around the country.
This inquiry that starts in Postville is a microcosm of a much bigger picture: in 1987 a group of Chabad followers arrived in Postville to support Sholom Rubashkin’s purchase of a local slaughterhouse, Agriprocessors. In 2008, the plant was raided by Federal ICE officials and hundreds of undocumented/illegal migrants were arrested. A wide range of scandals — emanating from the slaughterhouse and the Chabad community — then came to public attention, including outrageous exploitation and mistreatment of non-Jews working in the slaughterhouse and the community at-large.
Most media assessments of the Postville story have steered away from important issues surrounding the Chabad Lubavitchers. One of the few who had the courage to honestly face what was there was Jewish author/scholar Stephen Bloom.
Included here is commentary from Bloom (author of POSTVILLE: A CLASH OF CULTURES IN HEARTLAND AMERICA) and his indictment of the collective Chabad community, and, conversely, excerpts from Mark Grey, Michelle Devlin, and Aaron Goldsmith (co-authors of POSTVILLE USA) who — in contradistinction — rejected generalizations about Chabad and focused on the positives of multiculturalism (originally stemming from mostly undocumented/illegal workers from around the world who worked — under atrocious conditions — in the slaughterhouse).
