During a heated five-hour security cabinet meeting on 24 May, Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich called for large-scale strikes on Beirut’s infrastructure in retaliation for Hezbollah’s First-Person View (FPV) drones, which have caused rising casualties among Israeli forces.
“We cannot defend ourselves to death. We need to bring down 10 buildings in Dahiye in response to every drone,” Smotrich said, according to Ynet.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reportedly pushed back against the notion, asking, “What are you suggesting? That every time there is a drone, we bring down 10 buildings?”
Netanyahu then asked if the same principle should be applied to Gaza and the occupied West Bank, to which Smotrich replied, “Unequivocally, yes. Wars are won through deterrence and exacting a price.”
According to Ynet, the discussions came amid growing Israeli concern over emerging US–Iran negotiations and the prospect of an agreement that could curb fighting with Hezbollah while constraining Israel’s ability to escalate militarily in Lebanon.

During the meeting, Israeli army Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir briefed the cabinet on the killing of an officer by an explosive drone in South Lebanon, then echoed Smotrich’s proposed doctrine, saying, “You cannot work with tweezers. A different equation has to be created, one that also includes strikes on buildings in Beirut and Tyre in order to deter.”

National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir also seconded Smotrich’s calls for mass civilian destruction, in a post on social media, saying, “It is forbidden to normalize the reality of explosive drones; it is time for the prime minister to bang on Trump’s table and inform him that we are returning to war in Lebanon.”
Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir took to social media to demand a drastic escalation in attacks on Lebanon in light of "explosive drones" launched by Hezbollah in response to Israeli attacks that have killed over 3,000 Lebanese people since 2 March.

Hezbollah has heavily integrated low-tech, fiber-optic guided FPV drones into its operations against invading Israeli forces in direct response to repeated Israeli ceasefire violations, including ongoing military expansion in southern Lebanon and airstrikes on Lebanese villages.
Hezbollah’s non-stop FPV drone operations have paralyzed Israeli occupation forces in south Lebanon – “restricting” nearly 80 percent of their planned military operations, Israel’s Broadcasting Corporation (KAN) reported on 18 May.
Israeli media reports have complained that the army did not take warnings about Hezbollah’s FPV drones seriously until facing heavy casualties in Lebanon this year. Troops are now attempting to deploy nets over outposts and occupation points in a bid to reduce the threat, but have so far failed to prevent being struck.
Overnight and through the morning, a series of Israeli strikes pounded multiple locations across southern Lebanon and the Bekaa Valley. Initial attacks focused on the southern coast, where an airstrike hit the city of Tyre and caused damage to the nearby Hiram Hospital.

The KAN report went on to say that some Israeli military operations are no longer being carried out in the daytime due to the concerns about Hezbollah’s drones, while other operations have been canceled altogether, pointing to continued casualties among troops.
The resistance has recently revealed for the first time footage of an FPV drone equipped with a thermal camera used to monitor and strike Israeli occupation soldiers in Bayada at night.
