Eat Your Plastic Goy – Scientists Develop ‘Cookies’ Made from Plastic Waste to Feed the Masses

Scientists have developed a disturbing new method for turning plastic waste into “food,” in a troubling effort to push the public into eating their own pollution.

The “food” is made using genetically engineered yeast to convert discarded bottles and packaging into ingredients for 3D-printed cookies.

Researchers at Southern Illinois University Carbondale say the process could eventually help address both plastic pollution and food shortages.

The team used CRISPR gene-editing technology to reprogram yeast strains so they could consume polyethylene terephthalate, or PET, a common plastic used in water bottles, food packaging, and clothing.

The microbes then convert the broken-down plastic into proteins, fats, acids, and flavor compounds that can be combined with more conventional ingredients and fed into a 3D printer.

The result is what the researchers call “µBites.”

µBites, or MicroBites, are small cookies printed in the shape of the Greek letter µ.

Scientists Say Plastic Cookies Could Be Safe to Eat

The researchers have not yet eaten the cookies themselves because they are still waiting for university approval.

But they say the smell is promising.

“I think it has a pleasant, appealing aroma,” lead researcher and microbiologist Lahiru Jayakody told New Scientist.

“And it will taste good, too.

“We’ve not tasted it, but it smells good — that’s for sure — like a real cookie.”

Before the yeast can digest the plastic, researchers first subject the PET to a process known as oxidative hydrothermal dissolution.

The method uses heat, water, and oxygen to break the plastic down into smaller compounds that the engineered yeast can consume.

The resulting material is turned into a slurry containing proteins, fats, and acids.

Researchers then combine that material with fiber, starch, and sweeteners to improve its texture and taste.

One engineered yeast strain was also able to convert plant biomass into vanilla flavorings.

Plastic Pollution Turned Into Food

The researchers hope the technology could eventually address two major global problems at once.

The world produces hundreds of millions of tons of plastic waste each year, while food insecurity continues affecting billions of people.

In theory, converting waste into edible material could reduce plastic accumulation while creating another food source.

But the economics remain a major obstacle.

Producing roughly 2.2 pounds of the experimental cookies currently costs about $60, according to The Guardian.

That makes them vastly more expensive than conventional food.

Experts are also skeptical that the technique could ever make a meaningful dent in global plastic pollution.

“We produce 400 million tons a year of plastic waste,” Imperial College London researcher Jason Hallett told New Scientist.

“You’re not going to turn it all into cookies.

“So it’s not a solution to the plastic-waste crisis.

“There’s no way you could do this commercially.

“We’re not gonna be eating plastic cookies.”

NASA Eyes Technology for Mars Missions

The strange technology may have a more practical use beyond Earth.

The research was funded through NASA’s Deep Space Food Challenge, which seeks new methods of producing food during extended space missions.

Astronauts traveling to destinations such as Mars would face severe limitations on how much food they could carry from Earth.

A system capable of converting waste and plant material into edible nutrients could therefore become useful during missions lasting months or years.

For now, however, nobody has actually tasted the plastic-derived cookies.

Scientists say they smell like the real thing.

Whether humanity is ever willing to eat them is another question.
