Another historic Christian church has been destroyed by fire, adding to a disturbing string of blazes that have devastated places of worship across the United States, Canada, and Europe.
The former Friendship Baptist Church in Cleveland, Ohio, was engulfed by a massive early-morning inferno last week, forcing nearly 60 firefighters into an hours-long battle to contain the flames.
The roof eventually collapsed, leaving the historic structure so badly damaged that its remains were demolished.
Officials initially listed the cause of the devastating blaze as unknown.
However, Cleveland fire investigators have now confirmed that the fire was intentionally set.

Authorities have reportedly ruled out a financial motive and indicated that arrests were expected as investigators worked through the warrant process.

Cleveland Fire Lieutenant Mike Norman described the loss as “irreplaceable,” with damage estimated at approximately $500,000.
‘Enough Is Enough’
Christian political commentator Gunther Eagleman responded to the destruction by demanding that church fires receive serious investigations rather than simply fading from public attention.
“Christians are supposed to just shrug and move along?” Eagleman wrote.
“No. Every church fire deserves a serious investigation.
“If it’s an accident, prove it.
“If it’s arson, hunt down whoever did it and prosecute them to the fullest extent of the law.
“Christians should never become numb to attacks on our churches.
“Enough is enough. Protect our churches.
“Defend our faith. Demand answers.”

The Cleveland blaze is far from the only recent fire to devastate a historic Christian site.
Just weeks earlier, the 164-year-old St Andrew’s Church in Leicester, England, suffered severe damage after flames erupted late on July 28.
The church, built in 1862 and designed by famed architect Sir George Gilbert Scott, caught fire on the ground floor before the flames spread into the roof.
Firefighters battled the blaze throughout the night.
Authorities subsequently said the most probable cause was accidental, noting that the building had been secure and showed no signs of forced entry.
Services have since resumed in the church hall, while repairs to the historic building could take years.
Pope Leo sent a letter expressing solidarity following the fire.
Historic London Church Reduced to Ashes
The Leicester blaze came only months after another historic British church was devastated.
In February, the more than century-old Kings Hall Methodist Church in Southall, West London, was largely reduced to ashes.
More than 10 fire engines and approximately 70 firefighters responded to the massive blaze.
Yet the destruction attracted comparatively little political attention.
Days later, then-Prime Minister Keir Starmer publicly addressed a security incident at Manchester Central Mosque during Ramadan and highlighted up to £40 million ($54.3M) in government funding to provide additional security for mosques, Muslim schools, and community centers.
Starmer remained silent about the destruction of the Southall church and the wider problem of crimes targeting Christian sites.
National Churches Trust data has documented hundreds of attacks against churches, including arson, along with thousands of crimes committed at church properties in recent years.
Security funding available per Christian site has also remained significantly lower than funding provided for mosques and synagogues.
New York Churches Hit by Arson
The troubling pattern extends across the Atlantic.
In Buffalo, New York, the 140-year-old former St. Ann’s Church has suffered multiple fires this year.
The historic church was sold in 2022 to a group affiliated with the Downtown Islamic Center, with plans to convert the building into an Islamic community center.
Two fires erupted at the property within four days in July.
Both were confirmed as arson.
Local officials subsequently expressed frustration that the vacant landmark had not been adequately secured by its owners.
In New York City, another historic Christian landmark was gutted in June when fire tore through the 173-year-old South Bushwick Reformed Church in Brooklyn.
The cause was initially described as “under investigation.”
The FDNY later determined that the blaze had been intentionally set.
Video reportedly showed a person of interest fleeing the scene, but no arrest followed.
The city subsequently rejected a preservation proposal and ordered the historic church demolished.
Weeks earlier, a 138-year-old church in Astoria, Queens, had suffered severe damage during a five-alarm fire.
That blaze was also followed by moves toward demolition.
Church Arson Surges in Canada
Canada has witnessed an even broader wave of destruction.
Arson attacks against churches more than doubled after 2021, while a Macdonald-Laurier Institute report found that fewer than 4% of cases resulted in charges.
Among the latest losses was an historic church dating to 1893 in Saint-Romain, Quebec.
The church was destroyed by fire in April, with authorities treating the blaze as arson.
Canada has lost numerous churches to suspicious or deliberately set fires in recent years, leaving communities without historic landmarks that had stood for generations.
France Losing Historic Christian Sites
France has faced a similar crisis involving its Christian heritage.
Nearly 50 fires or attempted arson attacks against churches and other Christian sites were recorded during one recent year.
A 19th-century church in Montenach was gutted by fire in May.
Other historic Christian properties, including a 17th-century chapel and a cloister, suffered major fire damage around the same period.
Studies have warned that France is losing a Christian religious building approximately every two weeks through fire, collapse, demolition, or deliberate destruction.
Each lost building represents more than bricks and timber.
Many have stood for centuries, surviving wars, political upheaval, and generations of cultural change before disappearing within hours.
Christians Demand Answers
Not every church fire is arson, and authorities have determined that some recent incidents were accidental.
But others initially described merely as “unknown” or “under investigation” have subsequently been confirmed as deliberately set.
Cleveland is now one of them.
The former Friendship Baptist Church survived for more than a century before an incendiary fire destroyed it.
Brooklyn’s South Bushwick Reformed Church was also deliberately torched.
Buffalo’s St. Ann’s was struck by two confirmed arson attacks within days.
Meanwhile, historic Christian sites continue disappearing across North America and Europe.
For Christians watching churches that survived generations suddenly reduced to ashes, Eagleman’s message is simple:
“Enough is enough.”
