Scientists have detected radio signals directly from an exoplanet for the first time in history. The international research team at the Center for Astrophysics led by Kevin Ortiz Ceballos, was able to identify recurring radio bursts coming from a massive gas giant located approximately 63 light-years away from Earth.
Scientists have confirmed that this is a natural phenomenon. The planet is emitting a rapid pulse due to its intense magnetic field. As the planet spins, charged particles from space interact with its magnetic field and with the planet’s atmosphere. This creates a natural radio broadcasting station.
Where did the radio waves come from?
For years, scientists have attempted to listen to radio waves from distant planets. However, this is made difficult by space noise. Radio signals picked up by telescopes can come from multiple sources. It is hard to determine whether they are coming from a planet or a massive star.
During this research, the team directed their telescopes toward a star system located 63 light years away from Earth. They used of quasars, which are active cores of galaxies billions of light-years away, as anchor points. They then measured radio signals against these anchor points. The resulting data confirmed that the radio bursts aligned with Beta Pictoris b.
Beta Pictoris b is a planet roughly 10 to 12 times the size of Jupiter. The planet is relatively young in cosmic terms. Its age is estimated to be around 20 million years old. Therefore, it is still glowing from the heat of its own creation. The planet completes a day in just eight to nine hours.
Scientists measured the invisible
For the first time in history, scientists have measured the strength of an exoplanet’s magnetic field through this groundbreaking research. The magnetic field is estimated to be at least 1,250 gauss, compared to Earth’s 0.5 gauss. Therefore, Beta Pictoris b has a magnetic field of approximately 2,500 times that of Earth. Measuring the planet’s magnetic field provides scientists with a blueprint to test theories regarding how the planet was formed and what its interior looks like.
While scientists agree that Beta Pictoris b is incapable of hosting life, the technique used to determine this will assist researchers in finding habitable planets. This research confirms that a strong magnetic field protects a planet from deadly stellar radiation. Without a magnetic field, the atmosphere is likely to be stripped away, causing liquid water to evaporate. This was observed on Mars.
Being able to identify radio signals provides scientists with a tool to check if other planets in space possess the magnetic field required to sustain alien life.
