Palestinians gain more sympathy than Israelis among US voters for the first time: Poll

As Israel’s genocide in Gaza continues, sympathy among US voters for Palestinians has eclipsed sympathy for Israelis, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released on 10 September.

The poll found that 38 percent of US voters said they were more sympathetic to the Palestinians, while 35 percent named the Israelis. The remaining 27 percent had no opinion.

“Since Oct. 7, 2023, the state of Israel has lost ground in the eyes of American voters, while the Palestinian population has new-found support,” Quinnipiac polling analyst Tim Malloy stated.

The results of the poll contrast strongly with a previous Quinnipiac poll taken right after the 7 October 2023 Hamas attack on Israeli settlements and military bases enforcing a siege on Gaza.

Roughly 1,200 Israeli soldiers and civilians were killed in the attacks, the majority by the Israeli military itself per the Hannibal Directive.

However, all of the Israeli deaths were attributed to Hamas in the western press.

In that poll, a record 61 percent of US voters expressed sympathy with the Israelis and only 12 percent with the Palestinians.

But after the start of Israel’s genocide of Palestinians in Gaza, support for Israel among the US public has fallen drastically.

Support for Israel slipped under 50 percent in December 2023 and has fallen further since as images of Palestinian civilians being killed by the Israeli military using US weapons became common on social media.

A Quinnipiac poll from August 2025 found that 50 percent of voters thought Israel was committing genocide based on what they knew about the situation in Gaza. In contrast, 35 percent did not think Israel is committing genocide.

The fall in support for Israel is particularly stark among young US voters, Quinnipiac’s Malloy stated.

Support for Palestinians is now strongest among Democrats at 62 percent, while just 13 percent favor Israel.

Republicans remain more sympathetic to Israelis, at 64 percent to 14 percent.

Forty percent of independents sympathize with the Palestinians compared to 29 percent who support Israelis.

Israel’s genocide of Palestinians would not be possible without a near-endless supply of funding and weapons from the US government, which is heavily influenced by the Israel lobby.

According to Thursday’s Quinnipiac poll, 48 percent of US voters believe their government is too supportive of Israel.

Another 34 percent said the support was about right, while eight percent said the US was not supportive enough. The remaining 10 percent had no opinion.

The percentage of US voters now sympathizing with the Palestinians is the highest, and the percentage sympathizing with the Israelis the lowest, since Quinnipiac began tracking the issue in 2001.
