In nineteen sixty-three, a man in the Cappadocia region of central Turkey decided to renovate his home. He knocked down a wall in his basement, the way people do when they want more space, the way people do when they expect to find soil or stone or nothing interesting at all. What he found instead was a tunnel. Not a small tunnel, not a collapsed passage from some forgotten century, but a corridor that stretched downward into darkness and kept going, level after level, carved out of the volcanic rock beneath his feet, descending in ways that made no immediate sense. He had not discovered a room. He had not discovered a cellar.
