Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) appointed Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-IL) to the January 6th commission. This comes after Pelosi rejected Reps. Jim Banks (R-IN) and Jim Jordan (R-OH) from the commission. The two were the first picks of Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy.
“It’s Congress’s duty to the Constitution to find the truth of the insurrection and to ensure such an assault on our Democracy can’t happen again,” Pelosi said in a video statement Sunday. “The January 6th Committee will find the facts in a way that has the confidence of the American people: with bipartisanship and patriotism.”
However, Kinzinger already has a chip on his shoulder from former President Trump. He voted to impeach Trump as a result of the Capitol riots. Later, when Trump held a rally in June, the Illinois lawmaker called it “the rally of a loser president.”
“I mean, he’s the first president to lose re-election in decades,” Kinzinger said on CNN at the time. “And I don’t know why these folks would go there and in essence ogle at and in many cases just short of worship a loser, but they did.”
But his role on the commission could be short-lived. Kinzinger is up for reelection next year, and a former Trump administration official is campaigning against him. Catalina Lauf worked in the Commerce Department under Trump. She says Kinzinger is a “fake Republican.”
