A young NASA scientist working on nuclear propulsion projects died in a violent car crash under suspicious circumstances after mysteriously vanishing from his home, becoming one of a growing number of deaths and disappearances involving officials tied to sensitive U.S. research programs.
Joshua LeBlanc, 29, was killed on July 22, 2025, after his Tesla crashed in rural Huntsville, Alabama.
LeBlanc slammed into a guardrail and multiple trees before his electric vehicle exploded in a deadly fireball, according to state authorities.
But the timeline and details surrounding his death have fueled lingering questions.
LeBlanc’s death has now come under renewed scrutiny, and it appears connected to a string of U.S. space, nuclear, and UFO-related scientists who have recently died or disappeared.
Missing Hours, Unusual Behavior
LeBlanc’s family reported him missing at 4:32 a.m. that same day after he failed to show up for work.
It was an abrupt departure from his normal routine.
Like other scientists who recently vanished, LeBlanc had left behind his phone and wallet, and relatives said he was not communicating.
They described this behavior as highly out of character.
At the time, family members feared he may have been abducted.
Investigators later tracked his movements using Tesla’s Sentry Mode data, which showed his vehicle had been parked at the Huntsville airport for approximately four hours earlier that morning.
However, this unexplained stop did not align with his plans.
By the afternoon, his car was found burned beyond recognition.
His body was so severely damaged that identification took three days and required forensic confirmation.
Tied to Sensitive Nuclear Programs
LeBlanc was not an ordinary engineer.
He worked at NASA for more than five years and held a leadership role in advanced propulsion research.
His work included NASA’s Space Nuclear Propulsion program, which is designed to enable faster missions to Mars and deep space, as well as the Demonstration Rocket for Agile Cislunar Operation (DRACO), a nuclear thermal propulsion system.
These programs are considered critical to the future of U.S. space and defense capabilities.
Part of a Growing Pattern
LeBlanc’s death is not an isolated case.
At least a dozen individuals connected to nuclear science, aerospace, and classified research programs have died or gone missing since 2022, many under circumstances described as unusual or unexplained.
Among those reported missing are Monica Reza, Melissa Casias, Anthony Chavez, Steven Garcia, and retired Air Force Maj. Gen. William Neil McCasland.
Others, including Michael David Hicks, Frank Maiwald, Nuno Loureiro, Jason Thomas, Amy Eskridge, and Carl Grillmair, have died in recent years, with several linked to NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory.
Authorities have not officially connected the cases, but the pattern has drawn increasing attention.
Federal Investigation Underway
The White House has acknowledged the situation, with President Donald Trump confirming the matter is under review.
“I hope it’s random, but we’re going to know in the next week and a half,” Trump said.
“I just left a meeting on that subject.”
Federal agencies are now involved.
“The FBI is spearheading the effort to look for connections into the missing and deceased scientists,” the bureau said in a statement.
“We are working with the Department of Energy, Department of War, and with our state and local law enforcement partners to find answers.”
More Questions Than Answers
Despite the official explanation of a crash, key details surrounding LeBlanc’s final hours remain unresolved, such as why he left without essentials, why his vehicle sat at the airport for several hours, and what led to the fatal collision later that day.
As investigators work to determine whether any links exist between the growing number of cases, the unanswered questions continue to mount.
For now, what officials describe as isolated incidents are beginning to look, to many observers, like something that demands far closer scrutiny.
