A bankruptcy judge blocked Sandy Hook families from a settlement with Alex Jones on Wednesday.
The New York Post reported:
A US bankruptcy judge on Wednesday blocked a settlement between families who have sued Alex Jones over his false claims about the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School mass shooting, saying their attempt to divide the bankrupt conspiracy theorist’s assets exceeded his court’s authority.
The decision complicates a proposed sale of Jones’ Infowars platform, and could spur divisions between families who sued Jones and won nearly $1.3 billion in Connecticut court cases and those who won $50 million in Texas courts.
The two groups of families had proposed a settlement that would guarantee the Texas families a 25% share of Jones’ future payments made to the Sandy Hook families, with the Connecticut families taking 75%.
US Bankruptcy Judge Christopher Lopez rejected the settlement at a hearing in Houston, saying the families were asking him to also divide up the assets of Infowars’ parent company, Free Speech Systems, despite the fact that the company had been dismissed from bankruptcy last year.
“I can’t do that,” Lopez said. “That case is closed.”
A federal judge previously ordered the liquidation of Alex Jones’ personal assets.
In December 2022, Alex Jones filed for personal bankruptcy protection in a Texas court after the Sandy Hook verdict.
A Connecticut judge previously ordered Alex Jones to pay an additional $473 million to Sandy Hook families, Reuters reported.
This is in addition to the $1 billion Alex Jones was ordered to pay for questioning the Sandy Hook shooting.
The auction for the assets of InfoWars was met with controversy after the winning bid by the satirical left-wing site The Onion was discovered to have won the bidding with a lower bid than others. Those close to the bidding claim that The Onion bid $1.5 million whereas noted controversialist Roger Stone had bid $3 million. The Onion was initially allowed to apply $5 million of future earnings from the InfoWars intellectual property in order to inflate the value of their bid.
Jones said the auction was “rigged” and the judge ordered a review of the case and the auction and rejected the auction’s outcome calling the process “unfair.”
