A Democratic congressman was carjacked Monday night in Washington’s Navy Yard neighborhood, the latest high profile crime to raise alarm in the nation’s capital.
A congressional source with direct knowledge of the incident said that Rep. Henry Cuellar, D-Texas, was carjacked at gunpoint, but that he was believed to be unharmed.
Capitol Police have been alerted to the crime, but there have been no arrests as of press time.
The carjacking of the veteran congressman came just months after Rep. Angie Craig, D-Minn., was assaulted in her apartment complex in Washington, D.C.
Also, the husband of former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi was brutally assaulted last year during a home invasion across the country in the couple’s San Francisco home.
Crime in D.C. has surged this year, with homicides clearing 200 for the year last week, marking a 35% jump from this point in the year prior. Law and order has deteriorated such that lawmakers in September, held a safety meeting to discuss tips for staffers to minimize the risk of becoming the victim of a violent crime.
