Texas Democratic Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee died at the age of 74 on Friday, according to a statement from her office.
The congresswoman’s family did not reveal a cause of death, but she was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer last month. Lee has been a strong advocate for racial justice and human rights for decades.
“Today, with incredible grief for our loss yet deep gratitude for the life she shared with us, we announce the passing of United States Representative Sheila Jackson Lee of the 18th Congressional District of Texas,” her family wrote in a statement shared on X.
Funeral arrangements are still pending, her family said in the post.
