The strike took place on Wednesday. Three drones carried out the attack. The targeted ship belonged to Israeli shipping firm ZIM.
Eighteen crew members were rescued by the Bulgarian Navy.
The Liberian-flagged vessel was managed by the Greek shipping company Contships Management. It had departed from the city of Haifa.
The ship “was carrying, among other things, lithium-ion batteries, flammable liquids, acids and chemical substances, alongside food products, construction materials and other goods,” according to Maariv.
Some containers fell into the sea. Inspections found no signs of pollution, but authorities continue to monitor the situation, reports have confirmed.
The Bulgarian government strongly condemned the attack, calling it a “dangerous escalation.”
Chief of Defense of the Bulgarian Armed Forces Emil Eftimov said Thursday that “Yesterday’s drones came from the direction of the sea – from the east.”
At least six vessels have been struck by drones off Bulgaria’s coast this month. Around two dozen seafarers are believed to be dead, according to government statements.

ZIM ships have repeatedly been targeted by the Yemeni Armed Forces (YAF), which is currently imposing a naval and air blockade against Saudi Arabia in response to its war on Yemen.
Yemeni forces managed to seize Bab al-Mandab, a critical energy route, during battles with Saudi proxies last month.
The attack on the Israeli vessel comes as tensions in the shuttered Strait of Hormuz remain high. Tehran asserts that the waterway is under its control and has vowed not to open it until its demands are met.
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said on Thursday that three oil tankers struck naval mines, exploded, and caught fire over the past 24 hours while attempting to exit the Strait of Hormuz through an unauthorized southern route, before being abandoned off the southern coast.
The tankers had disabled their radar and navigation systems and ignored IRGC warnings.
