Hezbollah turns south Lebanon into ‘graveyard’ for Israeli tanks, breaks record for daily operations

Lebanese resistance group Hezbollah has significantly escalated its military operations against Israel over the past few hours, striking over 20 Merkava tanks in south Lebanon and firing long-range ballistic missiles at Tel Aviv.

The escalation saw Hezbollah break its own record, carrying out 87 operations in a single day.

Over 60 rockets were fired toward the Galilee from south Lebanon on 26 March, as ground battles between the resistance and invading Israeli troops continued to intensify.

“The Mujahideen of the Islamic Resistance targeted a Merkava tank near the Khazan reservoir in the town of Qana at 07:05 am on Thursday, 26-03-2026, with a guided missile and achieved a confirmed hit, bringing the total number of tanks targeted in the town today to 8,” Hezbollah said in a statement.

Over the past 24 hours, Hezbollah fighters have targeted a total of 21 Merkava tanks.

A single ambush resulted in the destruction of 10 Merkava tanks and one D9 bulldozer, Hezbollah reported in a summary of operations on Thursday. Israel’s military admitted to the death of one soldier.

“[The] Israeli enemy army advanced to carry out a maneuver aiming to seize control of the area between the towns of Taybeh and Qantara, with the objective of reconnaissance and exposing the positions of the Islamic Resistance’s defenses. The fighters monitored them and prepared to lure the enemy into a well-planned ambush,” it said, adding that “the fighters succeeded in thwarting the enemy’s maneuver, inflicting losses including 10 Merkava tanks and D9 bulldozers.”

As the fierce battles raged across south Lebanon on Thursday, Hezbollah simultaneously bombarded Israeli positions and military bases across the border with rockets and drones.

Just after midnight, the resistance movement fired at least seven long-range ballistic missiles toward Tel Aviv.

Israel’s ambulance service said at least two impact sites were reported, but heavy censorship was imposed on the attack. Hezbollah said in a statement that it targeted “the headquarters of the Israeli Ministry of War (Kyria) in the center of Tel Aviv, and the Dolphin barracks belonging to the Military Intelligence Division north of Tel Aviv, with a number of special missiles.”

Hezbollah had broken its own record on Wednesday for the number of daily operations in a single day, announcing 87 operations.

Hebrew media expressed shock at the pace of the resistance group’s military operations.

After Hezbollah opened its support front for Gaza in October 2023, tens of thousands of Israelis fled the northern settlements. Many refused to return despite the ceasefire deal, as residents of the north accused the Israeli government of abandoning them.

This sentiment has intensified among Israelis in the north since Hezbollah resumed its operations against Israel on 2 March. The Lebanese resistance has recently issued evacuation orders for all of Israel’s northern settlements.

“You finished Misgav Am, you finished Teshuba, you finished Gader, you finished everything. What are you doing?” said the mayor of the Margaliot settlement on Israel’s Channel 12, addressing the Israeli government while in tears.
