Israeli authorities have issued a tender for 627 new housing units in the Kochav Yaakov settlement in the occupied Palestinian West Bank, Al-Jazeera reported on 9 August, citing the Palestinian Colonization and Wall Resistance Commission (CRRC).
The Israel Land Authority on Thursday published the tender for the project, which will be built on Palestinian land located north of occupied Jerusalem between the Qalandia checkpoint and the city of Ramallah.
Kochav Yaakov is part of a cluster of existing Jewish settlements known as “Binyamin.”
The settlement project is designed to “deepen the separation between Jerusalem and its Palestinian surroundings” and strengthen links to nearby settlements and access roads, CRRC stated.
Israel designated 30 November as the deadline for construction companies to submit bids for the project, which was first approved in April 2025 and covers 253.7 dunams (25.37 hectares or about 63 acres).
This year, Israel has accelerated the approval and construction of Jewish settlements in the occupied West Bank under the supervision of Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich.
The settlements, which are illegal under international law, form the foundation of Israeli efforts to forcibly expel Palestinians from their homes and lands, replace them with Jewish settlers, and annex the Palestinian territories to Greater Israel.
A 2024 International Court of Justice (ICJ) advisory opinion affirmed Israel’s continued occupation of Palestinian territory as unlawful.

Israel first conquered and occupied the Palestinian territories of the West Bank and Gaza and Syrian territory in the Golan Heights in 1967.
CRRC reports further that Israeli authorities have issued 12 illegal settlement tenders in the first half of 2026, including 1,138 housing units concentrated in five main settlements.
Additional tenders have been issued for industrial zones, offices, nursing homes and tourism facilities.
The increase in illegal settlement building this year has been accompanied by a surge in violence by Jewish settlers against Palestinians.
Jewish settlers, typically operating under the protection of the Israeli army, have carried out more than 11,000 attacks in the West Bank since January 2026 in a bid to drive the Palestinians from their lands.
According to National Public Radio (NPR), efforts to establish new Jewish settlements and seize Palestinian land in the West Bank have reached a “frenzied pitch.”
On 7 August, NPR spoke with Luay Adele, a Palestinian man who borrowed heavily to build a cinder block wall around his house to protect his family from settlers living in a nearby illegal outpost.
“I need the wall to protect my family from settlers and from the Israeli army,” he said.
Settlers often invade his land, destroying vegetable gardens and ripping up olive trees. “The settlers come and destroy everything,” Luay’s wife stated.
“The settlers forbid us to plant. They cut off our water, and they destroy our greenhouses,” stated another Palestinian man, Serhan Ali Kanan.

Shepherd Kusai Abu Al-Kabash told NPR how he was attacked and abducted by Jewish settlers earlier this year.
“The 29-year-old describes how this past March, they stripped him, beat him and his family, and zip-tied his genitals, moments captured by his security cameras,” NPR wrote.
The settlers also stole some 400 sheep from Kusai, a flock accumulated by his extended family over two generations that constituted the whole of their wealth.
Kusai and his family take two-hour shifts through the night every night to protect their land from the heavily armed settlers.
“And when we see settlers, the first thing we do is we’d get our phones to film them, and we prepare stones to throw,” explained Kusai’s wife, Najat Basharat.
