Israel moves to seize Gaza flotilla, sanction humanitarian aid mission

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz has ordered measures to block a Gaza-bound flotilla carrying about 1,000 activists on roughly 100 vessels, according to Israeli media reports on 29 April, ahead of the flotilla’s expected arrival near Gaza in the coming days.

Israeli naval forces are preparing to intercept the convoy before it reaches Gaza’s coast, as they have done repeatedly in past missions, seizing vessels in international waters, detaining activists, and blocking any attempt to reach the besieged population, in direct opposition to international humanitarian law.

Katz has also moved to choke off the humanitarian campaign financially, saying he “imposed sanctions” on a crowdfunding effort linked to the flotilla, claiming it is “organized by the Hamas terror organization … under the guise of a humanitarian aid flotilla.”

He added that the move is “intended to deter donors from contributing to a terror organization.”

The ships, currently sailing near Crete, are attempting to challenge Israel’s naval blockade of the Gaza Strip, which is once again being threatened with famine and renewed bombardment, as Israel signals it may reignite its genocide against the besieged population.

The effort is a direct response to “apartheid, occupation, ethnic cleansing, and genocide,” as stated by the organizers, with the aim of delivering life-saving aid that Israel’s blockade has deliberately denied to Gaza’s population.

Flotilla organizers say the mission is part of a broader “global movement” driven by civil society, “where governments have failed,” pledging action “at sea, in the streets, and in centers of power.”

Participants include activists, lawyers, and medical volunteers from multiple countries.

Israeli officials claimed the initiative violates UN Resolution 2803, insisting aid must pass through approved channels – the same channels that have allowed in only a fraction of the humanitarian aid required, as the systemic deprivation and weaponization of basic needs persists.

The Global Sumud Flotilla humanitarian mission seeks to establish a direct maritime corridor to a population cut off by Israeli siege, carrying not only supplies but the “accumulated moral weight” of a world that has failed to act, organizers expressed.

The flotilla advances under the slogan “We sail until Palestine is free.”
