Israel is preparing to resume the genocide in Gaza over Hamas’s unwillingness to surrender its weapons, according to a report by Hebrew newspaper Israel Hayom on 9 April.
“Israel is bracing for a return to full-scale fighting in the Gaza Strip as the deadline given to Hamas to comply with the US demand to disarm expires Thursday,” the report said.
“Nickolay Mladenov, head of the Board of Peace, is set to meet with Hamas representatives in Turkey on Thursday and receive their formal response on the demand – a condition tied directly to the Gaza ceasefire agreement,” it added.
On 7 April, the US-led ‘Board of Peace’ established by US President Donald Trump gave Hamas until the week’s end to disarm, according to the Times of Israel.
Hamas is expected to reject the demand, as it has repeatedly refused disarmament since the Gaza ceasefire was reached in October 2025.
“Minor amendments to the disarmament proposal would still be considered, while requests for fundamental changes by Hamas would not be accepted,” sources told the Times of Israel.
The Israeli army warned earlier this month that Hamas was taking advantage of the war on Iran to rebuild its forces, threatening to return to war in Gaza and “complete the mission” if Hamas is not disarmed.
Abu Obeida, the spokesman for Hamas’s Qassam Brigades, said on 5 April – referring to disarmament – that “what the enemy is trying to pass today on the Palestinian resistance and the people of Gaza through the mediators is extremely dangerous.”
“What is required is to pressure the entity [Israel] to complete its commitments in the first stage, before talking about the terms of the second stage,” he added.
The deadline approaches as Israeli violations of the Gaza ceasefire continue unabated.
At least 738 people have been killed and over 2,000 others injured since the October 2025 ‘ceasefire,’ the Gaza Health Ministry said in an updated toll on 9 April.
Over 10 people were killed by Israeli attacks in Gaza this week, including a journalist.
The siege continues, and the flow of aid into the strip remains critically low. In violation of the terms of the ceasefire, Israel has allowed only around 5,000 aid trucks into Gaza.
This marks just one-fifth of the 23,400 trucks that were meant to enter since the agreement was reached.
