Israeli strike levels building sheltering displaced families in south Lebanon

An Israeli airstrike on 9 May leveled a building sheltering a number of forcibly displaced families in Saksakiyeh, Lebanon, with dozens of civilians believed to be dead under the rubble.

The strike was part of a massive wave of drone, warplane, and artillery attacks that killed at least a dozen people.

The attacks hit several populated areas in the south, including Nabatieh, Tyre, Saadiyat, Jiyyeh, and the entrance to Chouf.

The final death toll has yet to be confirmed, as Israel continues to hinder rescue and recovery operations in Saksakiyeh.

The confirmed toll included one person killed in Saadiyat, three in Multaqa al-Nahrayn at the Chouf entrance, two in Jiyyeh, three in Burj Rahal, and two in Nabatieh al-Fawqa after an Israeli drone struck a motorcycle.

The same wave included drone strikes near Abbasiya junction, Hariss, Mansouri, and heavy warplane raids on Yater.

In Nabatieh, Lebanon’s Health Ministry said a Syrian man was killed, and his 12-year-old daughter was seriously wounded when an Israeli drone first hit their motorcycle.

After they moved away, a second strike killed the father instantly, while a third strike hit the girl around 100 meters away, leaving her in critical condition and undergoing emergency surgery at Nabatieh Government Hospital.

The Health Ministry condemned the attack as deliberate, stating that it targeted civilians and children and constituted a serious violation of international humanitarian law.

By early Saturday afternoon, strikes had also hit Kfar Reman, Arzoun, Maaroub, Jannata, Barish, Tayr Dibba, Zrarieh, Harouf, Touline, Majdal Selm, Deir Antar, and several outskirts around Nabatieh, Mansouri, Majdal Zoun, Safad al-Battikh, and Baraachit.

Israel’s escalating assault and ethnic cleansing campaign in southern Lebanon has inflicted a growing toll on civilians, despite the so-called ceasefire.

In retaliation for the Israeli ceasefire violations, the Lebanese resistance launched a series of operations against Israeli military positions and vehicles on the same day.
