Haifa’s oil refinery was hit on 19 March by ballistic missiles launched by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Aerospace Force.

Video footage showed plumes of smoke rising from the Bazan oil refinery.

According to Israeli media, the refinery was hit after Iran fired three back-to-back waves of ballistic missile attacks towards central and northern Israel on Thursday.

Power outages resulted in the Krayot suburbs of Haifa following the missile attack.

No injuries were initially reported.

The Bazan refinery is Israel’s largest, with a refining capacity of 197,000 barrels per day (bpd).

It was also damaged by Iranian missiles during the 12-day war between Israel and Iran last June. The strikes killed three of the refinery’s employees and caused concerns about disruptions in fuel supplies, which ultimately did not materialize.

Thursday’s strike came in response to an Israeli strike on a key Iranian natural gas processing facility in the country’s southwest on Wednesday.

South Pars Gas Field is the largest in the world and the biggest source of domestic energy in Iran, which has struggled to produce sufficient electricity.

The attack on South Pars is the first time Israel has struck natural gas facilities in Iran.

Israeli and US officials said the strike on South Pars was coordinated with and approved by the White House, Axios reported.

US President Donald Trump said the US had not been given a warning of the attack. However, it seems unlikely that US intelligence would not have been aware of the plan to strike before it happened, The Guardian noted.

Hours later, Iran conducted two missile strikes on Qatar’s Ras Laffan Industrial City and hit natural gas facilities, causing “extensive damage,” but no casualties, QatarEnergy said in a statement.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi wrote on X on Thursday that Iran’s response to Israel’s attack on its natural gas infrastructure was restrained due to a request for de-escalation.

“Our response to Israel’s attack on our infrastructure employed FRACTION of our power. The ONLY reason for restraint was respect for requested de-escalation.”

“ZERO restraint if our infrastructures are struck again,” he warned.
