Nearly 800,000 people in Lebanon have been displaced by the indiscriminate Israeli campaign of strikes across the country, which began early this month after Hezbollah responded to Tel Aviv’s ceasefire violations.
The number of registered displaced people in Lebanon has reached 759,300, according to Lebanese government figures cited by UNHCR.
“It has been just over a week since the new escalation in conflict started on 2 March, when Israeli evacuation warnings to residents of more than 53 villages and densely populated areas in Lebanon and intensified airstrikes forced families across Lebanon to flee within minutes. Lives have been upended on a massive scale,” said the UNHCR in a statement a day earlier.
UNHCR said around 120,000 of the displaced “are sheltering in government-designated collective sites, while many others are staying with relatives or friends, or are still searching for accommodation. Many – often displaced for the second time since the hostilities in 2024 – fled in a rush with almost nothing, seeking safety” in other parts of the country.
“Civilians must be protected at all times,” the statement concluded.
Israel has, in recent days, intensified indiscriminate airstrikes on Beirut and its suburbs, as well as southern and eastern Lebanon.
Over 570 people have been killed by Israel in Lebanon since the indiscriminate campaign began in early March. Nearly 1,500 more are injured.
The Israeli military has ordered the forced displacement of residents in almost the entire southern suburb of Beirut, as well as everywhere below the Litani River in south Lebanon.
A top Israeli official vowed last week that Beirut’s suburb “will resemble Khan Yunis,” a city in the southern Gaza Strip that was wiped out during the genocide.
As Israel continues to escalate, Hezbollah is confronting invading Israeli forces in the south, while intensifying rocket and drone attacks on troops and bases across the border, as well as positions inside Lebanon that were occupied during the November 2024 ceasefire in violation of the deal.
