Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu offered his “congratulations” on 5 October to Brazilian Senator Flavio Bolsonaro for his performance in the first round of the presidential election, while wishing him “good luck” in the second round…
“I look forward to restoring the extraordinary friendship between Israel and Brazil,” Netanyahu wrote on X.
Flavio Bolsonaro received 47 percent of the vote compared with President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva’s 45 percent.
Because neither candidate received 50 percent of the vote, they will compete in a runoff election set for 25 October.
Israel–Brazil relations worsened after the left-wing President Lula stated that Israel is carrying out a genocide against Palestinians in Gaza.

Brazil's leading presidential candidate, Flávio Bolsonaro, says that if he is elected, he will build his country into the "Kingdom of Israel" based on his Christian Zionist beliefs.
He says the 120,000 Jews living in Brazil will be better taken care of than his own citizens.

“Best wishes for your great victory, my friend,” Netanyahu told Bolsonaro, the son of former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro.
Both Netanyahu and US President Donald Trump enjoyed close relations with Jair Bolsonaro, who is currently under house arrest.
The former Brazilian president was given a 27-year prison sentence last year for leading a coup attempt in 2022 to remain in power after losing the election to Lula.
He was later allowed to leave prison on house arrest due to health issues.
The Brazilian government has called for a probe into US funding of far-right groups.
Polls have just opened in Brazil for one of the most tightly contested elections in the country's history.

Meanwhile, Brazil has accused the US of interfering in its presidential election by directing funds towards right-wing groups in advance of the vote.
Brazilian Attorney General Jorge Messias called for the probe after The Guardian published a story suggesting that US President Donald Trump planned to award $1 million to right-wing civil groups opposing the Brazilian Supreme Court, which convicted Jair Bolsonaro of planning the coup against Lula.
Foreign meddling “cannot be tolerated,” Messias stated.
“The information is especially serious in light of Brazil’s electoral process and the recent episodes of external pressure on our institutions,” the attorney general added.
In June, another of Jair Bolsonaro’s sons, Eduardo Bolsonaro, was sentenced to more than four years in prison after a court ruled he sought US intervention in his father’s case.
