Massive Israeli bombing of Lebanon kills, injures hundreds in Beirut alone

The Israeli army launched a massive wave of brutal and deadly airstrikes on the Lebanese capital, Beirut, on the afternoon of 8 April, hours after rejecting the inclusion of Lebanon in a newly announced ceasefire initiative to end the war in Iran.

Strikes hit Ain al-Tineh, Barbour, Ain al-Mreisseh, Corniche al-Mazraa, Bir Hassan, and several other parts of central Beirut and the outskirts and suburbs of the capital.

Video footage from across the capital showed large clouds of smoke in densely populated civilian neighborhoods. Massive destruction has occurred.

“Injuries are numerous, and the number of martyrs is high. The situation is difficult, and we are doing everything we can to save them,” said Secretary General of the Lebanese Red Cross George Kettani. “Hospitals are overwhelmed.”

Airstrikes also hit south Lebanon and the country’s east, including Tyre (Sur) and Saida in the south and Hermel and Shmistar in the east.

More than 300 have been killed and wounded in Beirut and the southern suburbs alone, and many victims are trapped under rubble, according to the Red Cross.

Israeli army spokesman Avichay Adraee said that warplanes carried out a large-scale bombing across Beirut, the Bekaa, and southern Lebanon, targeting around 100 sites in 10 minutes.

He described the bombing as the largest since 28 February.

“We will continue to strike the Hezbollah terrorist organization and seize every opportunity – we will not compromise on the security of the northern residents. We will continue to attack without pause,” Israeli army Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir said.

The army announced a new operation in Lebanon dubbed “Eternal Darkness.”

Just before the attacks hit Beirut, Hezbollah released a statement urging civilians to avoid returning to south Lebanon and other targeted areas until the ceasefire is official.

“Today, we stand on the threshold of a major historic victory, one that will be achieved through the sacrifices of the fighters, the blood of the martyrs, and your unmatched steadfastness and patience. At this critical moment, we call on you to exercise further patience, remain steadfast, and wait, and not to head toward the villages, towns, and targeted areas in the South, the Bekaa, and Beirut’s southern suburbs before the final official announcement of a ceasefire in Lebanon,” the resistance group said.

“This is because the treacherous and brutal enemy, seeking to escape the image of its defeat, may resort to acts of deception to fabricate a false scene suggesting it achieved what it failed to accomplish on the battlefield,” it added.

The deadly wave of strikes on Lebanon comes hours after the US agreed to a two-week ceasefire with Iran, following President Donald Trump’s acceptance of a 10-point plan from Tehran as a basis for further negotiations.

A round of negotiations in Islamabad, Pakistan, has been planned for Friday.

Iran’s 10-point plan includes a US non-aggression commitment, Iranian control over the Strait of Hormuz, acceptance of uranium enrichment, full sanctions removal, compensation to Iran, withdrawal of all US combat forces from the region, and cessation of war on all fronts, including Lebanon.
