The mystery surrounding a missing New Mexico nuclear scientist has deepened dramatically after new details emerged about her death, raising fresh questions in a case that has already drawn the attention of federal investigators and President Donald Trump.

As Slay News reported earlier this week, Melissa Casias, a 54-year-old employee of Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), was found dead in a remote section of New Mexico’s Carson National Forest nearly a year after she vanished without a trace.

Now, reports indicate that Casias suffered a gunshot wound to the head and was discovered alongside a firearm, details that are fueling speculation and skepticism about what really happened.

Disturbing Discovery Raises New Questions

On Monday, New Mexico State Police confirmed that human remains found in the McGaffey Ridge area of Carson National Forest belonged to Casias, who disappeared on June 26, 2025.

The location where her remains were discovered is roughly six miles from the last area where she was reportedly seen walking before she vanished.

While authorities have not yet released an official cause of death, the Daily Mail reported that Casias had suffered a gunshot wound to the skull and that a firearm was found “close by.”

Her remains were reportedly discovered in a highly unusual condition.

According to reports, Casias’s body was skeletonized and found propped in a seated position against a tree deep within the forest.

Although some observers have suggested the circumstances may point to suicide, private investigator Thomas McNally strongly disputes that conclusion.

McNally has been working on the case on behalf of Casias’s parents, Joe and Joanne Mondragon.

He believes there are significant unanswered questions surrounding her death and suspects foul play may have been involved.

“It’s great that the press is getting this story out there because of the Los Alamos stuff,” McNally said.

“But it has nothing to do with LANL.

“If you want to tell the story, tell a real story.”

“I want to be emphatic on this point – this is in no way, shape, or form related to her job,” he added.

Strange Circumstances Surrounding Disappearance

One detail that has continued to puzzle investigators and observers alike is what Casias left behind before disappearing.

Reports indicate that she left behind all of her identification and every one of her cell phones before vanishing.

The unusual circumstances have fueled speculation ever since her disappearance first made headlines.

Earlier this year, former FBI Assistant Director Chris Swecker suggested the possibility that Casias’s disappearance could fit into a broader pattern involving individuals connected to highly sensitive government research programs.

Swecker noted that employees at facilities such as Los Alamos National Laboratory often possess access to classified information, even when they are not scientists themselves.

“In a classified lab, or just a high clearance lab, they would basically be in the know on what’s going on,” Swecker explained.

“And it wouldn’t be the first time their administrative assistant has been targeted.”

Growing Scrutiny Over String of Scientist Deaths

Casias’s case has attracted additional attention because it comes amid a troubling series of deaths and disappearances involving individuals connected to some of America’s most sensitive scientific, aerospace, and defense programs.

Reports indicate that at least a dozen scientists and researchers linked to national security-related work have been found dead or have disappeared under mysterious circumstances in recent years.

The growing list of cases has prompted increasing concern among lawmakers and investigators.

FBI Director Kash Patel has reportedly launched an investigation into the pattern of deaths and disappearances, while President Donald Trump has publicly acknowledged the cases and described the circumstances as suspicious.

At this stage, authorities have not announced any confirmed connection between Casias’s death and the broader string of cases.

However, with the discovery of a gunshot wound, unanswered questions surrounding her disappearance, and a growing federal investigation into similar incidents, scrutiny of the case is only intensifying.

For now, the official cause and manner of Casias’s death remain unresolved, leaving her family and the public still searching for answers.
