A new Pew Research Center survey, released on 7 April, shows rising negative sentiment among US citizens toward Israel and its Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, with majorities now expressing unfavorable views and declining confidence in leadership.

The study was conducted from 23–29 March among 3,507 US adult citizens.

Six in 10 respondents report an unfavorable view of Israel, up from 53 percent last year, while the number of those holding a “very unfavorable” view has also surged, nearly tripling since 2022.

Confidence in Netanyahu has followed a similar downward trajectory, with around 59 percent saying they have little or no confidence in him “to do the right thing regarding world affairs.”

Majorities of adults under 50 in both parties now view Israel negatively, including a growing share of younger Republicans, even as 58 percent of Republicans overall still express favorable views.

Meanwhile, Democrats hold unfavorable views across all age groups.

The survey also looked at religion, finding that Jewish citizens and White evangelical Protestants largely maintain positive views of Israel, while significantly lower support is recorded among Catholics, Black Protestants, and the religiously unaffiliated.

Among Muslim citizens, only four percent express a favorable view.

Examining views on US President Donald Trump, the survey found that over 55 percent of respondents lack confidence in his handling of US–Israel relations, though Republican support remains strong.

Over half of respondents said Israel’s war on Gaza was personally important to them, but more than two-thirds said the US war on Iran was more important.

In late March, before the fragile ceasefire between the US, Israel, and Iran was announced, a Reuters/Ipsos poll found that 66 percent of US citizens supported ending the war quickly, even if its stated goals were not achieved.

An earlier Gallup poll released in late February found that, for the first time, more US citizens say they sympathize with Palestinians than Israelis, with 41 percent backing Palestinians and 36 percent Israelis.

The shift echoes more recent survey data, as US citizens have grown increasingly opposed to the war, citing rising fuel costs, financial strain, and the broader economic fallout from the US-Israeli war on Iran.
