Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday signed a law that officially ratifies a strategic partnership with Iran, which promises better cooperation in trade, defense, energy, and regional infrastructure projects.

The original agreement was reached in January, when Iranian leader Masoud Pezeshkian visited Moscow, but the agreement was not ratified until a law on the matter passed the Russian legislature, and was signed by Putin, according to the Kyiv Independent.

The deal includes promises that neither side will provide assistance to a third party involved in military conflict with the other, meaning Iran cannot help Ukraine while it is fighting Russia.

Iran has been on Russia’s side of the conflict since Russia launched its attack in 2022, with the Middle Eastern power supplying thousands of Shahed drones to Russia, which were used in attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure. It has also sent short-range ballistic missiles to Russia.

The deal also comes after Putin reportedly made a similar agreement with North Korea last year.
