Rep. Mike Lawler (R-NY) is calling for a full investigation after reports surfaced that detailed conversations from White House Situation Room meetings may have been leaked to anti-Trump reporters for an upcoming book.
The controversy centers on claims that anti-Trump New York Times reporters Maggie Haberman and Jonathan Swan obtained information from highly sensitive discussions for their forthcoming book, “Regime Change.”
If recordings or transcripts from Situation Room meetings were improperly obtained, it would represent a serious breach of one of the most secure facilities in the federal government.
Concerns Raised Over Sensitive White House Discussions
According to a report from Axios, administration officials are concerned that some of the most sensitive national security conversations may have been recorded without authorization.
“Such a taped leak would be a shocking breach of one of the most secure settings on Earth,” Axios reported, noting that independent recording devices are prohibited inside the Situation Room.
One administration source told the outlet:
“We’re afraid some of our most sensitive conversations were being recorded.
“And we have no idea which ones.”
Excerpts published from the book reportedly contain detailed accounts of internal discussions surrounding the conflict with Iran, including exchanges involving senior administration officials.
The revelations have sparked concerns about how such information was obtained and whether classified or sensitive conversations were improperly accessed.
Lawler: ‘This Should Be Fully Investigated’
Appearing on NewsNation’s “Katie Pavlich Tonight,” Lawler said any unauthorized recording or leak from the Situation Room would be deeply troubling and must be investigated.
“Well, it beats the heck out of me,” Lawler said when asked who may have been responsible.
“But obviously, it is deeply concerning if anyone was recording conversations in the Situation Room.”
Lawler noted that members of Congress routinely participate in classified briefings where strict rules prohibit electronic devices.
“As a member of Congress, we go into classified settings all the time,” he said.
“These are deeply sensitive conversations, and they most certainly should not be recorded.”
“So that is something that, if they really feel there was a leak of any kind, should be fully investigated.”
The New York congressman stressed that protecting national security information should be a bipartisan concern.
“Anytime you’re dealing with national security issues, I don’t care what the topic is; this is not something that should occur,” Lawler said.
Strict Security Protocols Raise Questions
Host Katie Pavlich pointed out that participants in classified meetings are typically prohibited from bringing devices such as smartphones or smartwatches into secure facilities.
Lawler agreed, explaining that security screenings are so strict that congressional briefings cannot even begin if electronic devices are detected.
“When we have a full member-of-Congress briefing involving all 435 members, they won’t even start the meeting if they detect an Apple Watch, a smartphone, or any type of electronic device,” Lawler said.
“They scan for them.”
“So for that to occur in the Situation Room certainly would be disconcerting—how anybody would be able to get a device in there and/or who would have done it.”
National Security Concerns Mount
Lawler said President Donald Trump and senior administration officials should be able to conduct sensitive discussions without fear that private deliberations will be leaked.
“I can only imagine the frustration that would result,” he said.
“You’re talking about deeply serious issues, and the president and his administration should have full confidence that they can have sensitive discussions without the possibility of a leak.”
Lawler added that many discussions involving Middle East policy and national security take place through secure channels specifically to prevent information from being disclosed.
“The objective is to ensure that these decisions—and the sensitive information at the core of them—are not being leaked or disseminated,” he said, “and certainly not in real time.”

As questions continue to mount about how details from Situation Room discussions made their way into a forthcoming book, lawmakers are increasingly demanding answers about whether one of the nation’s most secure facilities was compromised.
