President Donald Trump Monday calls for the Keystone XL pipeline to be constructed
Trump had approved the permit for the project in his first term. Among his first actions upon taking office, former President Joe Biden canceled the project. In a Congressionally-mandated report, the Department of Energy revealed in January 2023 that ending the federal permitting process for the project cost as much as 59,000 jobs and $9.6 billion in economic activity.
In a post on his Truth Social platform Monday, Trump said Biden had “viciously jettisoned” the project and called for it to be built immediately.
“I know they [the pipeline owners] were treated very badly by Sleepy Joe Biden, but the Trump Administration is very different — Easy approvals, almost immediate start! If not them, perhaps another Pipeline Company. We want the Keystone XL Pipeline built!” Trump said.
Trump was reportedly planning to revive the embattled project prior to winning the election. Energy experts have doubts that investors will risk betting on the project, which could have any permits revoked again by future administrations, as well as litigation from environmental groups.
