NASA scientists said that Earth is shifting its weight due to massive seasonal movement of water, ice and air across the planet. Earth’s geocenter is not a fixed point since the planet’s weight is constantly being redistributed. The news suggests that the actual movement of the geocenter is about half of what scientists had previously estimated. This could have benefits for navigation systems.

NASA scientists made the new estimate by developing a multi-layered satellite-tracking technique that helped eliminate blind spots in previous scientific models. NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory combined satellite laser ranging, global GPS observations and orbital data from satellites in low Earth orbit to make the new measurements.

The science behind Earth’s movement

If Earth were a solid marble, its center of mass would remain constant. The center of mass is the balance point where the planet’s weight is concentrated. However, Earth is dynamic, with oceans that shift, glaciers that melt and air that moves. These seasonal changes redistribute mass around the planet, causing the center of mass to shift by fractions of an inch throughout the year.

For instance, from March to April, snow accumulated across North America and Eurasia moves Earth’s center of mass about 3 millimeters towards the North Pole. Meanwhile, rainwater in the Amazon Basin peaks, causing Earth’s center of mass to move about 2.2 millimeters toward South America. From August to October, melting ice and seasonal rainfall cause Earth’s center of mass to move slightly toward the South Pacific. Dense winter air in December shifts the balance once again.

Scientists have known about this phenomenon for a long time. However, NASA’s research has found that the annual movement of the geocenter is only about half as large as scientists believed eight years ago.

NASA scientist Donald Argus and his team say that this discovery can significantly improve the International Terrestrial Reference Frame. This system provides a reference for GPS, aviation and military navigation systems.

Beneficial or detrimental?

The world currently operates on the established Terrestrial Reference Frame. Since this system operates at millimeter-level accuracy, an unaccounted-for shift in Earth’s geocenter could cause errors in navigation systems.

However, once these errors are corrected, the new measurements could enable scientists to build a much more precise navigation framework. This accuracy could optimize logistics. Therefore, high-precision industries such as autonomous farming and maritime shipping could benefit greatly from this discovery by reducing positioning errors.

This breakthrough could also allow scientists to measure seasonal mass shifts with greater accuracy, improving their understanding of how water, ice and air move around the planet. More precise measurements could also contribute to research tracking climate change and other long-term environmental changes.
