The White House will impose a 104% tariff on Chinese goods after Beijing failed to meet President Donald Trump’s noon deadline to withdraw its 34% retaliatory tariff.
“The President also wanted me to tell all of you that if China reaches out to make a deal, he’ll be incredibly gracious, but he’s going to do what’s best for the American people,” White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed on Tuesday. “China has to call first. The Chinese want to make a deal. They just don’t know how to do it. But the President will be implementing these 104% tariffs on China tonight.”
Trump has already imposed tariffs on China and the additional 50% follows the Chinese response to his “Liberation Day” tariffs. The U.S. will begin to collect revenues on Wednesday.
“Therefore, if China does not withdraw its 34% increase above their already long term trading abuses by tomorrow, April 8th, 2025, the United States will impose ADDITIONAL Tariffs on China of 50%, effective April 9th. Additionally, all talks with China concerning their requested meetings with us will be terminated!” Trump vowed on Monday. “Negotiations with other countries, which have also requested meetings, will begin taking place immediately. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”
