Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Wis., said Tuesday that he hoped GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump would contemplate commuting first son Hunter Biden’s sentence as a way to unite the country.
“From my standpoint I think we should be looking at … some measure of mercy there,” Johnson said in reference to Hunter Biden. “I wouldn’t really want to pardon because I don’t want to excuse the behavior … some commutation of sense or whatever. Again, I don’t want to get ahead of myself because he hasn’t been sentenced yet.”
Republicans in the House and the Senate have launched numerous investigations into Hunter and how his overseas business dealings involved his father, President Joe Biden.
Hunter also has faced charges of tax evasion and lying on a form to purchase a gun.
“I think President Trump did the right thing in 2017 when he basically said, ‘No, we’re not going after Hillary Clinton,'” Johnson said.
Johnson said that he didn’t think Hunter Biden should be pardoned, but shouldn’t get off “scot-free.”
