During a recent Minnesota House Commerce Committee hearing on HF 1434, Woke Democrat state Rep. Leigh Finke warned that its language could also block “potentially educational” online content for queer youth, igniting a national backlash. Finke repeatedly raised concerns about how its enforcement might affect so-called LGBT kids who already receive little or no queer‑inclusive sex education.
Finke argued that some attorneys general are “almost jubilant” about using age‑verification laws—like a Texas statute recently upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court—to stop young “queer” people from accessing material that “could be educational if they are queer,” and warned that vague definitions of “prurient interest” could be stretched to treat information about the “very existence of transgender kids” as sexual content.
Advocacy groups such as Moms for Liberty and the Stanley M. Herzog Foundation shared the clip on Facebook, accusing Finke of opposing “common‑sense” age verification, saying she thinks it is “crucial for so‑called queer kids to have access to pornography,” and insisting that such laws are designed solely “to protect children” from explicit material.
On X and Reddit, many users condemned the comments as “disgusting,” accused Finke of “grooming” children, labeled as a “child predator,” and called the argument “the worst possible defense” of civil‑liberties concerns, with some urging that the video be used against Finke in future campaigns or demanding resignation.
Finke claimed to have the intent to work with the Republican author on the bill, complained that opponents had quickly clipped and “twist[ed]” Finke’s comments to do harm to Finke because Finke is so-called “transgender”, and vowed to “fight for queer kids” despite the backlash.
Finke has continued to argue that HF 1434 can and should be written to keep minors off pornography sites without becoming, in Finke’s words, part of a political “machine that is now designed specifically to hate and destroy transgender people,” or a tool for censoring age‑appropriate information about queer identities.
