Over two-thirds of US-Israeli targets in Tehran ‘not linked to military’: Report

Only about one-third of the infrastructure destroyed in Iran’s capital during the US-Israeli war was military-linked, Bloomberg revealed on 21 April in an analysis of the damage caused by Washington and Tel Aviv.

Analysis of land use within damage clusters in Tehran found that “2,816 buildings were hit, around 32 percent of which were linked to the military, 25 percent to industry, 21 percent to civilians, while 19 percent were commercial and two percent governmental,” the report revealed.

“In a city of this size, destruction does not always produce a single, concentrated visual field of devastation. The line between military targets and civilian life cannot be cleanly drawn in practice. Once strikes begin, their impact spreads across this interdependent fabric,” Nazanin Shahrokni of Canada’s Simon Fraser University told Bloomberg.

She went on to say that Washington and Tel Aviv accuse Tehran of embedding military assets into civilian infrastructure, adding that this language is “used to describe and justify attacks in ways that make them appear controlled and contained, almost as if war can be made clean.”

“But that language obscures both the real effects of these operations and the limits of such warfare in a dense urban setting,” she stressed.

The report cites a study by Conflict Ecology researchers at Oregon State University, which is based on radar imagery.

The study estimates that 7,645 buildings were destroyed or damaged by US-Israeli attacks across Iran between 28 February and 8 April. This includes 60 education facilities and 12 health facilities.

Other estimates have placed the number of health facilities damaged or destroyed at over 300.

The Iranian government announced last week that the total direct and indirect damage from the war stands at $270 billion. Well over 2,000 people have been killed.

Along with a region-wide ceasefire and sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz, the Islamic Republic has demanded reparations from Washington.

The Bloomberg report comes days after US President Donald Trump renewed his threat to strike all bridges and power plants across Iran if it does not agree to US terms and surrender its nuclear program.

On 2 April, US-Israeli strikes hit the century-old Pasteur Institute of Iran and the major B1 Bridge. The day before, US-Israeli airstrikes hit the Daro Bakhsh Pharmaceutical Factory in western Tehran, founded in 1956.
