A Colorado teacher has been fired after an investigation found that students were repeatedly directed to kiss classmates during classroom performances, with some students reporting they felt pressured to participate because they believed it affected their grades.

The case has sparked outrage among parents and raised new concerns about inappropriate conduct in public school classrooms.

School Board Votes Unanimously to Terminate Teacher

The Denver Public Schools Board of Education voted unanimously to terminate French language and culture teacher Jennifer Honka after an investigation concluded she engaged in conduct that was inappropriate and failed to protect the best interests of students.

According to an independent review, students at Northeast Early College were repeatedly assigned roles in classroom skits that required them to kiss one another.

Investigators found that the students selected for the kissing scenes were consistently members of the same sex, with multiple students reporting that girls were routinely chosen for the assignments.

The school board ultimately terminated Honka for “incompetence and neglect of duty.”

Students Reportedly Felt Pressured to Participate

The investigation revealed numerous accounts from students who said they felt uncomfortable participating in the skits.

One student told investigators she kissed another student because she believed it was expected by her teacher and connected to her class performance.

The student later shared a meme featuring Honka with the caption: “She makes girls kiss.”

According to the report, the student’s attendance dropped significantly afterward.

Another student testified that she refused to participate and received a zero on the assignment.

A third student reportedly became upset after being asked to kiss multiple classmates during a classroom skit and later confided in another teacher.

The skits reportedly carried titles such as “The Neighbors Saw Everything” and “The Boring Kiss,” with some scenes involving romantic relationships between characters.

Students also reported that Honka maintained a classroom rule stating that “the answer is always ‘yes,’” which investigators found may have contributed to pressure on students to participate.

Investigation Raises Broader Concerns

The investigation found that the issue extended beyond the kissing assignments.

According to the report, Honka frequently discussed personal topics with students, including her sexuality, fertility struggles, suicidal thoughts, and experiences with child abuse.

Honka, who reportedly identified herself as a lesbian and LGBTQ advocate in class discussions, told investigators she was attempting to build trust with students.

However, some students reported feeling uncomfortable with the frequent personal disclosures.

One student struggling with suicidal thoughts reportedly walked out of class during one such discussion.

Judge Calls Conduct “Irresponsible and Inappropriate”

Colorado Administrative Law Judge Keith J. Kirchubel concluded that the issue was not simply whether students were physically forced to kiss.

Instead, he found that students were placed in an inappropriate situation where they were expected to make highly personal decisions in front of classmates while under the authority of a teacher responsible for grading them.

“Regardless of whether (Honka) ‘forced’ the participants to kiss, her choice of script forced them to express their preferences and consent about a very personal and sexualized activity on the spot in front of their peers,” Kirchubel wrote.

“They were also forced to determine whether they were comfortable dissenting from the direction of the script to their teacher, who was in a position of control over the situation.”

Kirchubel concluded that while role-playing exercises can be an effective teaching tool, the way the assignments were implemented was “irresponsible and inappropriate.”

District Defends Decision

Following the termination, Denver Public Schools defended its actions and praised students who came forward.

“The safety, emotional well-being, and dignity of our students are the absolute highest priorities of Denver Public Schools,” district spokesman Scott Pribble said.

“Following a thorough district investigation and an independent review by a state administrative law judge, the DPS Board of Education voted unanimously to terminate the employment of Jennifer Honka.

“It was determined that her actions did not protect the best interests of the children in her classroom.”

Pribble also commended staff members who reported the allegations and emphasized that schools must remain places where students feel safe and respected.

The controversy comes as parents across the country continue raising concerns about classroom activities they believe cross professional boundaries and place students in uncomfortable or inappropriate situations.
