US President Donald Trump has renewed his claims that “very good” talks with Iran were ongoing, while the Islamic Republic continued to insist on 5 August that talks on the Strait of Hormuz were being held between Tehran and Muscat only.

Trump told Fox News that “very good discussions” were held over the past 24 hours, adding that the Strait of Hormuz “is going to be open very soon.”
The president went on to claim that “They had an all-day negotiation.” He added that “If [the Iranians] back out again, they are going to get hit really hard.”
Iranian state broadcaster IRIB reported that the talks were taking place with Oman. It said any deal reached with Muscat would not necessarily result in a full reopening of Hormuz.
“The possible agreement between Iran and Oman on the arrangements for vessels to pass through the Strait of Hormuz has nothing to do with the immediate opening of this strait,” a source told IRIB.
The source added that the strait will remain closed if Washington continues its violations, even if an Iranian–Omani agreement is finalized.
“The reopening of the Strait of Hormuz depends on a change in US behavior and the correction of its violations,” sources told the state broadcaster.
An informed source made similar comments to Iran’s Sepah News on Wednesday.
“As long as US interference and threats of military action against Iran continue, the agreement will remain delayed. Iran will not conclude any agreement under the shadow of threats.”
The Iranian Foreign Ministry also said talks with Oman were aimed at “establishing safe shipping routes” while “safeguarding” Iran’s rights and sovereignty.
“The proposed arrangement would allow Iran to oversee inbound maritime traffic through an Iranian-controlled shipping lane while maintaining visibility over outbound traffic and retaining the authority to intervene whenever necessary to protect security and navigation,” Tasnim News Agency reported.
Iranian media outlet Press TV reported a day earlier that talks between Iran and Oman were entering a “new phase” despite US attempts to obstruct the process.

The report cites an unnamed senior Iranian official.
Iran–Oman talks on Hormuz are in a “new phase” and “entered a more serious phase after the 18 June [memorandum of understanding] to end the imposed war,” the report states.
However, the source told Press TV US interference has not stopped.
“What should have been a straightforward bilateral process between two littoral states has been systematically disrupted and derailed by the United States and certain regional actors acting in concert with Washington,” the senior official said on Tuesday.
“Their obstructionism has not only delayed a mutually beneficial outcome but has also exposed the hollow nature of American influence in a region where Iran’s strategic interests are paramount and non-negotiable,” the official added.
The official reinforced Tehran’s official position that while the Islamic Republic insists on joint Iranian-Omani management of Hormuz, it is open to the participation of other regional countries without the interference of Washington.
“The consultations with Oman were pursued with diligence, and Iran extended the same spirit of cooperation to discussions with other countries in the region,” the source said.
Washington renewed heavy bombardment of Iran for weeks last month. Tehran responded with heavy and destructive attacks on US military bases across the region, inflicting heavy casualties on US troops.

Trump paused his campaign several days ago, claiming mediators were requesting a de-escalation. US media reports said that the pause came after the military advised Trump that the strikes were ineffective.
Tehran continues to double down on all its terms in the Islamabad memorandum of understanding (MoU) reached in June – primarily joint Iranian-Omani control of Hormuz.
Another main term is a comprehensive ceasefire and Israeli withdrawal from Lebanon.
Washington has tried to obstruct Iran–Oman talks on the matter, particularly by activating an alternate route in violation of Iranian naval warnings, Tehran has said.
Iranian forces have struck numerous tankers violating Tehran’s blockade on the Strait of Hormuz – which normally serves as the passageway for about 20 percent of global energy.
