The Pentagon has ordered US Central Command (CENTCOM) to “conclude preparations” for resuming all-out war against Iran, sources were cited as saying by Axios on 8 October.

“The Pentagon instructed [CENTCOM] several days ago to conclude preparations for resuming major combat operations in Iran,” said anonymous US officials.

The order did not include a specific date for the resumption of the war, the report states. US President Donald Trump has not made a final decision on the timing.

“It could happen before the US midterm election and possibly the Israeli elections a week earlier,” Axios cites US and Israeli sources as saying.

The expected resumption of illegal attacks will include “massive bombing” of Iranian energy infrastructure – to which Iran has vowed an unprecedented retaliation.

The report goes on to say that restarting the war before midterms could impact the election, particularly due to energy costs.

A Pentagon official told the outlet that the War Department’s “job is to develop and present military options to the president.”

“Trump has all options available at any time,” a White House official is cited as saying.

“The US is in a very strong position with control of the Strait of Hormuz and the Iranian economy collapsing. Iran has been decimated, and things will go one of two ways: the easy way or the hard way,” the official claimed, adding that Trump “has all the cards.”

The report also says Israel will be involved in any renewed assault and will work “in tandem” with Washington. A day earlier, The Atlantic reported that the resumption of the war could take place before the midterms.

Tehran has vowed that renewed war will be met with wider retaliatory operations than before.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) issued a warning to the US and Israel last month, stressing that any new escalation will be met with an “expansion of the geography” of the war, as well as the use of “new weapons” against “new targets.”

The Islamic Republic has previously vowed to destroy all US and Israeli-linked energy infrastructure across the region if its oil and power sites are bombed.
