Federal authorities have arrested seven college-aged activists accused of carrying out a coordinated campaign of threats, vandalism, and intimidation targeting University of Michigan officials, Jewish organizations, business owners, and public officials in an effort to pressure institutions to sever ties with Israel.
The arrests were announced Wednesday by FBI Director Kash Patel, who described the alleged conduct as a sustained effort to terrorize victims in the aftermath of Hamas’ October 7, 2023, attack on Israel.
According to a federal indictment, the suspects are accused of organizing attacks that included vandalizing homes with pro-Hamas slogans, leaving threatening messages, and damaging private property across eastern Michigan over a period spanning more than a year.
FBI Alleges Coordinated Campaign of Intimidation
“These individuals spent over a year allegedly engaging in a targeted, coordinated campaign of violence and intimidation motivated by the October 7, 2023 Hamas terrorist attack on Israel,” Patel said in a statement.
“They vandalized property, left threatening messages, and even violently attacked homes while children slept inside.”
Federal investigators say the alleged conspiracy operated from approximately March 2024 through April 2025.
According to court documents, members of the group allegedly used encrypted messaging platforms and social media channels to identify targets, coordinate activities, and publicize their actions online.
Authorities say the targets included University of Michigan leadership, elected officials, business owners, and a law enforcement officer.
Homes Allegedly Attacked While Families Slept
Federal prosecutors allege the activists escalated their tactics over time.
According to investigators, members of the group allegedly broke windows and threw glass containers filled with chemicals into private residences while families, including children, were inside.
Several incidents reportedly involved homes being spray-painted with messages such as “Intifada” and “Free Palestine,” while threatening notes were allegedly left at victims’ properties.
Some of the most significant incidents occurred on October 7, 2024—the one-year anniversary of Hamas’ terrorist attack on Israel.
Jewish Organizations and University Officials Targeted
Patel said one suspect allegedly targeted the Jewish Federation in Bloomfield Township during the October 7 demonstrations.
Another suspect, who was reportedly employed by the University of Michigan, is accused of vandalizing the home of the university’s president.
Federal officials argue the attacks were designed to intimidate individuals and institutions perceived as supportive of Israel.
The allegations come amid heightened tensions on college campuses nationwide following the outbreak of war between Israel and Hamas.
Multi-State FBI Operation Leads to Arrests
Patel praised investigators involved in the case and emphasized that the bureau would aggressively pursue those accused of using violence and threats to advance political causes.
“Our FBI Detroit team and partners across Michigan, Illinois, and Wisconsin pursued a thorough, rigorous investigation and did a tremendous job executing the multi-state operation early this morning,” Patel said.
The seven suspects have been charged for their alleged roles in conspiracies to transmit threats in interstate and foreign commerce.
If convicted, they could face significant federal penalties.
Federal Authorities Signal Zero Tolerance
The arrests represent one of the most significant federal crackdowns yet on alleged anti-Israel extremist activity tied to campus-related activism.
Federal officials have increasingly warned that political activism crosses a legal line when it turns into intimidation, threats, property destruction, or violence.
Patel made clear that the FBI intends to hold those responsible accountable.
The investigation remains ongoing, and additional details are expected to emerge as the case proceeds through federal court.
