An attorney investigating the mysterious murder of Democratic National Committee (DNC) staffer Seth Rich has revealed an explosive new development in the case.
Prominent attorney Ty Clevenger said hundreds of pages of records related to Rich were discovered in a previously hidden room at FBI headquarters.
Even more alarming, Clevenger said the documents were found inside a SCIF, or Sensitive Compartmented Information Facility, among files marked for destruction.
Rich was shot and killed in Washington, D.C., in 2016 as he walked home.
Authorities have long described the killing as a “botched robbery.”
However, questions surrounding the case have persisted for years.
“SETH RICH UPDATE: Today an attorney for the government told me that I would soon be getting confirmation that several hundred pages of documents related to Seth Rich were found in a previously-hidden room at FBI headquarters,” Clevenger wrote on X.
“You may recall that on July 30, 2025, Fox News Digital reported that newly-installed FBI Director Kash Patel and his leadership team had located an unmapped / sealed area within the J. Edgar Hoover Building’s SCIF,” he added.
Files Reportedly Found Among ‘Burn Bags’
The reported discovery raises serious questions about what the FBI knew and why records related to Rich were allegedly stored in a secret facility.
Clevenger said the files were among other documents in “burn bags” that were marked as “designated for destruction.”
Those bags were reportedly linked to thousands of pages of classified files connected to the 2016 “Crossfire Hurricane” investigation.
Now, according to Clevenger, records related to Rich appear to have been among documents kept in that hidden area.
“I don’t even know whether the FBI will agree to release a single page of what it found,” Clevenger said.
“Nonetheless, any confirmation that the files were in the secret SCIF raises a lot of questions,” he continued.
“At the very least, some very high-level people had something to hide,” he added.
That is the central issue.
The FBI originally told Clevenger in 2017 that it had no records on Rich at all.
The bureau claimed it was not involved in the investigation of his death.
FBI Previously Denied Having Records
The official story has long been that Rich was killed during a botched robbery and that the case was handled only by local Washington, D.C., police.
But that explanation has faced growing scrutiny as the FBI has slowly acknowledged the existence of records tied to Rich.
Clevenger said the FBI has since admitted possessing several thousand pages of documents involving Rich.
Those records reportedly include materials related to Rich’s work laptop, an image of his personal laptop, and another DVD.
Despite those admissions, Clevenger has accused the FBI of continuing to fight transparency.
On June 15, 2026, he filed another motion alleging that the bureau is withholding records in violation of court orders.
The latest reported discovery only deepens the mystery.
If the FBI was not involved in the investigation, why were records about Rich inside a secret SCIF at FBI headquarters?
If there was nothing to hide, why were the records allegedly mixed with documents designated for destruction?
And why did the bureau tell Clevenger it had no records in the first place?
Clevenger Says Case Is ‘Radioactive’
Clevenger said lawmakers on Capitol Hill have been unwilling to pursue the issue.
“The murder of Seth Rich – and the resulting cover-up – is as radioactive as any topic I’ve ever seen,” Clevenger said.
“I hope that changes soon, and I’ll post updates as soon as I know more,” he added.
Clevenger then ended his post with a pointed message.
“BTW, I’m not suicidal. I feel great,” he wrote.

Clevenger’s closing remark underscores the explosive nature of the allegations and the long-running suspicion surrounding the case.
Rich’s murder has remained one of the most controversial unresolved political deaths of the 2016 election era.
He was killed shortly after DNC and Hillary Clinton campaign emails were leaked to WikiLeaks.
It has long been suspected by some that Rich may have downloaded DNC emails and provided them to WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange.
WikiLeaks has always refused to identify its sources and has not confirmed or denied that Rich leaked the emails.
However, Rich’s murder soon after the leaks fueled intense public speculation.
Questions Mount over FBI Secrecy
The reported discovery of Rich-related files in a secret FBI SCIF adds a new layer to the case.
For years, the public was told the FBI had nothing to do with Rich’s murder investigation.
Then the bureau admitted it had records.
