Can Electromagnetic Fields Cause Chronic Disease?

Exposure to microwave radiation from baby monitors, cellphones, cordless phones, Wi-Fi routers, Bluetooth devices, smart meters, and other wireless devices causes cellular dysfunction. Mitochondria in the cells, in particular, are damaged due to excessive free radicals. EMFs have been linked to anxiety disorders, Alzheimer’s disease, autism, cardiac arrhythmias, depression, and infertility. Electromagnetic fields are potentially harmful to pregnant women, putting their children at risk for attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autism, and behavioral or emotional issues. Strategies that may be helpful in reducing the injury by EMFs include optimizing magnesium levels and eating Nrf-2 boosting plant foods. Nrf-2 stands for nuclear factor-erythroid 2-re-lated factor 2, which is a protein that controls how certain genes are expressed and helps protect cells from damage caused by free radicals. The negative effects of electromagnetic fields continue to ignite controversy around the world.

The most dangerous pollution is the invisible sea of EMFs swimming around our bodies. We are exposed to EMFs all day long, not only out in public, but inside our own homes, too. It is almost impossible to avoid EMFs all together. There are, however, practical ways to limit our exposure. Getting educated about the negative effects of EMFs is crucial to our wellbeing. It is even more critical if we are dealing with chronic illness, which may be worth our time to reduce our EMF exposure as much as possible. Our corrupt government keeps telling us these are safe, but we should consider the following:

  • The telecommunication industry has manipulated federal regulatory agencies, public health authorities, and scientists through intense and sophisticated lobbying efforts leaving consumers baffled and unaware of health risks associated with electromagnetic fields.
  • Any negative effects from EMFs may not be immediately recognized, but will gradually develop over time (just like cigarette smoking).

 

According to the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, EMFs are “in-visible areas of energy, often referred to as radiation, that are associated with the use of electrical power.” Most experts agree on the hazards linked with ionizing radiation, in which we are exposed to at the dentist’s office or when getting X-rays. Ionizing radiation is believed to have enough energy to break the covalent bonds in our DNA but actually most of the harmful effects are due to the oxidative stress resulting in excessive free radicals. Typically, our cellphones emit microwaves in the 2 to 5 gigahertz range. Interestingly, Dr. Mercola reviewed a number of studies that show double or single strand DNA breaks are actually higher when exposed to non-ionizing microwave radiation than ionizing radiation, perhaps due to increased oxidative stress.

 

Martin Pall, Ph.D., Professor Emeritus of biochemistry and basic medical sciences at Washington State University, has identified and published several papers describing the mechanisms of how EMFs damage humans, plants, and animals. Many studies show how our intracellular calcium increases with exposure to EMFs. Pall discovered a number of studies showing that we can block or greatly decrease the number of EMFs using calcium channel blockers, a medication commonly used in heart disease and high blood pressure (hypertension). It is the excess calcium in the cell and increased calcium signaling that are responsible for a vast majority of the biological effects of EMFs. Electromagnetic fields work by activating voltage-gated calcium channels (VGCCs). Upon activation, they allow a tremendous influx of calcium into the cell. When there is increased calcium in the cell, it increases levels of both nitric oxide (NO) and superoxide. Nitric oxide has many beneficial health effects in the human body. Massively excessive amounts, however, of NO react with superoxide, forming peroxynitrite, which is a very potent oxidant stressor. Peroxy-nitrite, in turn, breaks down to form reactive free radicals (reactive nitrogen and reactive oxygen). These include hydroxyl, carbonate, and nitric oxide radicals, which all do damage.

 

EMF radiation activates the VGCCs in the outer cell membrane, triggering a chain reaction of disastrous events, such as:

  • Decimates our mitochondrial function, cell membranes, and cellular proteins
  • Causes severe cellular damage
  • Results in DNA breaks
  • Drastically accelerates our aging process
  • Places us at higher risk for chronic diseases

 

Once formed, peroxynitrite reacts relatively slowly with molecules, making it a selective oxidant. Inside our bodies, peroxynitrites modify tyrosine molecules in protein to form a new substance, nitrotyrosine and nitration of structural protein. These variations from nitration are visible in human biopsy of ALS, atherosclerosis, inflammatory bowel disease, decreased cardiac blood flow (ischemia), and septic lung disease.

Oxidative stress from peroxynitrites may result in single-strand breaks of DNA. This pathway of oxidative devastation triggered by low-frequency radiation may partially explain the unprecedented growth of chronic disease since 1990. Truly, this is a far greater concern than brain cancer, when it comes to the hazards of cellphones. Once we understand cellphones can contribute to these chronic diseases, we may be more motivated to limit exposure. The following description below shows the rates of increase noted with the following diseases and disorders since 1990:

 

  • ADHD – increase of 819% since 1990
  • Alzheimer’s disease – increase of 299% since 1990
  • Autism – increase of 2,094% since 1990
  • Bipolar disease in youth – increase of 10,833% since 1990
  • Celiac disease – increase of 1,111% since 1990
  • Chronic fatigue syndrome – increase of 11,027% since 1990
  • Depression – increase of 280% since 1990
  • Diabetes – increase of 305% since 1990
  • Fibromyalgia – increase of 7,727% since 1990
  • Hypothyroidism – increase of 702% since 1990
  • Lupus – increase of 787% since 1990
  • Osteoarthritis – increase of 449% since 1990
  • Sleep apnea – increase of 430% since 1990

 

Tissues with the highest densities of VGCCs are at greatest risk of damage. Body tissues with the highest concentration of VGCCs and most susceptible to harm from EMFs include:

  • Brain •Testes
  • Nervous system •Retina
  • Pacemaker of heart – leading to arrhythmias

When VGCCs are activated in our brains, they release neurotransmitters and neuroendocrine hormones, which can produce a variety of neuro-

psychiatric consequences. Among the most common consequences of prolonged EMF exposure to the brain are:

  • Alzheimer’s •Anxiety
  • Autism – some studies have linked autism in children to excessive EMF exposure during pregnancy
  • Depression

While EMFs may not be the sole cause of heart disease, it is very likely a significant factor. The most common heart issues linked to EMF exposure include:

  • Atrial flutter (fibrillation)
  • Decreased heart rate (bradycardia)
  • Cardiac arrhythmias and sudden death
  • Heart palpitations
  • Increased heart rate (tachycardia)

EMFs exposure can increase the risk of infertility, especially in males. This makes for a good reason not to carry our cellphones in a pants pocket near our groin area or a laptop on our laps. Studies have linked low-level electromagnetic radiation exposure from cell-phones to an 8% decrease in sperm motility and a 9% reduction in sperm viability. Plus, in this general area, we have a number of sensitive organs, including our bladders, colons, kidneys, and livers, which are all susceptible to damage from radiation. For females, the risk of breast cancer is higher if the cellphone is carried in the bra. Generally, the most common location for breast cancer is the upper, outer quadrant. When cancer is located in the upper, inner quadrant, it is probably related to cellphone radiation (if carried in the bra).

Below are some helpful tips to decrease EMF exposure:

  • Connect desktop computer to the internet with a wired connection and to put desktop in airplane mode. Also avoid wireless keyboards, mice, trackballs, game systems, printers, and house phones.
  • Shut off Wi-Fi when not using, especially when sleeping. Ideally it is best to hardwire our homes so it can be turned off at all times. A USB Ethernet adapter allows connection to the internet without a wireless connection.
  • Shut off electricity to the bedroom at night. This works to decrease electrical fields from wires.
  • Use a battery operated clock, ideally one without a light.
  • Consider replacing microwave oven with a steam convection oven. Next to induction stove-

top burners, microwave ovens are the largest EMF polluters in the house.

  • Avoid using “smart” appliances and thermostats that depend on wireless signaling, including all new “smart” TVs.
  • Refuse smart meters as long as a shield can be added to an existing smart meter,
  • Consider moving our babies’ beds into our rooms to avoid using a baby monitor or to use a hardwire monitor.
  • Replace CFL bulbs with incandescent bulbs. Ideally remove all fluorescent lights from the house. They can transfer a current to our bodies just by being close to the bulbs.
  • Avoid carrying a cellphone close to the body unless it is in airplane mode. Similarly, never sleep with a cellphone unless it is in airplane mode.
  • When using a cellphone, use the speaker phone and hold it at least 3 feet away from the body.

There are a few nutritional interventions that may help to protect the body from EMFs. Dr. Mercola recommends the following:

  • Magnesium – As a natural calcium channel blocker, magnesium can help reduce the effects of EMF on VGCCs. Most of the population is deficient in this mineral. Dr. Mercola suggests 1 to 2 grams a day.
  • Molecular hydrogen – Studies have demonstrated that molecular hydrogen can lessen about 80% of the damage caused by EMFs because it targets the free radicals produced by radiation, such as peroxynitrites.
  • Nrf2 – Increasing Nrf2, upregulates superoxide dismutase, help to lower inflammation, improves mitochondrial function, and stimulates mitochondrial synthesis.

Nrf2 can be activated by consuming Nrf2-boosting foods such as sulforaphane from cruciferous vegetables, such as cauliflower, broccoli, cabbage, kale, bok choy, Brussels sprouts, and garden cress. Nrf2 can also be activated by foods high in phenolic antioxidants (berries), the long-chained omega-3 fats DHA and EPA, carotenoids (especially lycopene), sulfur compounds from allium vegetables, isothiocyanates  from the cabbage group, and terpenoid-rich foods. Performing high-intensity exercises that activate the nitric oxide (NO) pathway, along with intermittent fasting, may activate Nrf2 too.

  • Spices – Certain spices may help prevent or repair damage from peroxynitrites. Spices rich in phenolic compounds, specifically cinnamon, cloves, ginger root, rosemary, and turmeric, have demonstrated some protective effects against peroxynitrite induced damage.

As mentioned earlier, children are at a much greater risk than adults. Sadly, most of our youth have widely adopted the “wireless revolution.” It is our responsibility to teach our children these dangers. Many kids have cellphones and wireless tablets before the age of five and many children sleep with their cellphones on or under pillows. The chance to experience greater mitochondrial damage over time is exponentially greater for children than it is for adults. Many children are growing up enveloped in technology. Depending on the habits of their parents, especially their mothers, many children are exposed to EMFs even before they were born. EMF radiation penetration is deeper in kids than adults because their skulls are thinner. There is no reliable way to predict the long-term effects on children. As compared to children born of mothers who did not use cellphones during pregnancy, children born of mothers who did ex-perienced a:

  • 49% increase in behavior problems
  • 35% increase in hyperactivity
  • 34% increase in peer-related problems
  • 25% increase in emotional issues
