‘Restraint is over’: Senior Iranian lawmaker threatens strikes on US bases, ships if violations persist

Spokesperson for the Iranian parliament’s Foreign Policy and National Security Committee, Ebrahim Rezaei, said on 10 May that Tehran will strike US military bases and vessels in response to any new violations from Washington – stressing that “restraint has come to an end.”

“Starting today, our restraint has come to an end. Any attack on our vessels will be met with a heavy and decisive Iranian response against US ships and bases,” Rezaei said in a statement.

“Time is working against the Americans,” he added. “It is in their interest not to act foolishly and sink deeper into the quagmire they have entered.”

“The best course is to surrender and make concessions. You must get used to the new regional order,” he went on to say.

The statement coincided with a UKMTO report saying that a bulk carrier was struck by an unknown projectile 23 nautical miles northeast of Doha, Qatar, causing a small fire that was later extinguished.

The Qatari Defense Ministry came out after and confirmed that a cargo ship in the country’s territorial waters northeast of Mesaieed Port was hit by a drone on Sunday.

The ministry said a limited fire aboard the ship was quickly brought under control. No injuries were reported, and the vessel continued its voyage to Mesaieed after arriving from Abu Dhabi.

Rezaei’s warning came as Washington awaited a response from Tehran to the latest US ceasefire proposal.

Axios recently claimed the US and Iran were close to a one-page MoU based on a proposal including a halt to Tehran’s uranium enrichment and a gradual reversal of maritime restrictions by both sides.

Tehran would also be required to transfer its enriched uranium outside the country, a demand Iran has repeatedly rejected. The US would also be allowed to resume bombing if talks collapse.

Rezaei had previously referred to the Axios report as a US “wish list.”

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on 8 May that Washington was expecting a response from Tehran within 24 hours. Iran dismissed the 24-hour ultimatum.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei stated that Tehran will deliver its response to the ceasefire proposal only when its internal review is complete.

Speaking shortly after Rubio’s comments in Rome, Baghaei emphasized that US-imposed deadlines “mean nothing” to the Islamic Republic and that the leadership will not be coerced into a premature agreement by “ultimatums.”

The Iranian parliament’s new warning comes days after Washington violated the truce by bombing Iran’s coast and attacking two vessels.

Iranian forces targeted two US military vessels in response. The next day, skirmishes broke out between Iranian and US forces in the Strait of Hormuz.

The US has maintained an illegal blockade of Iranian ports since the ceasefire began. After violating the truce, US President Donald Trump called the strikes against Iran “just a love tap.”
