China warned Washington on 25 August that it is ready to respond to “maximum pressure” and “economic isolation” pursued by the US, while renewing its condemnation of sanctions on Iran and secondary economic measures targeting countries that deal with Tehran.
“An economic war and maximum pressure will not help resolve the issue,” said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian.
“They will only further intensify contradictions and conflicts, cause risks to spill over, disrupt the global economic and financial order, and harm the legitimate rights and interests of other countries,” he added.
The comments came during a press conference, as the spokesman was responding to a question about US Treasury chief Scott Bessent’s announcement of plans to strangle Iran economically and target all countries that do business with it.
“China is closely following the relevant developments and will take all necessary measures to firmly safeguard its own rights and interests.”
Beijing also called the “unilateral” sanctions plan “illegal.”
“Cooperation between China and Iran has always been conducted within the framework of international law and should not be interfered with or disrupted,” the spokesperson warned.
He had made similar comments a day earlier. US pressure policies and sanctions only “lead to escalation,” he said on 24 August.
This week, Iran announced its own sanctions on vessels violating its new regulations in the Strait of Hormuz, which has been shut by Tehran over US attacks and violations of an understanding reached in June.
Chinese vessels that have coordinated with Iranian naval forces have been allowed through the strait throughout the several waves of closures Hormuz has faced since the US and Israel launched their illegal war on Iran, killing thousands.
Currently, the critical waterway is fully shuttered to the US and its allies. Washington has also reimposed its blockade on Iranian ports.
China came under US sanctions earlier this year for energy cooperation with Iran.
Earlier this month, a Chinese court highlighted the first judicial ruling aimed at establishing a mandatory implementation of the country’s Anti-Sanctions Law.
“Faced with increasingly complex sanctions tools and the continued expansion of sanctions measures by jurisdictions such as the US and [European Union], Chinese companies can no longer rely solely on a passive compliance approach to deal with external regulatory pressure,” said lawyers from the Beijing-based Jia Yuan Law Offices.
The Commerce Ministry of China said in May 2026 that “the Chinese government has consistently opposed unilateral sanctions that lack UN authorization and basis in international law.”
The US government says it is planning to impose the “toughest sanctions in history” against Iran.
Iranian officials warn that this US policy will backfire.
