A heavy drone strike hit the US Embassy in Iraq’s capital, Baghdad, early on 17 March, with the Iraqi government calling the retaliatory operation a “terrorist attack.”

The drone strike came hours after the assassination of a top leader in the Kataib Hezbollah resistance faction.
According to Reuters, the embassy’s C-RAM air defense system shot down at least two drones while a third hit inside the compound.
Video footage showed a large blast and smoke rising out of the embassy building.
The embassy’s defense system, as well as its helipad, had been damaged in a resistance attack just days earlier.
No group has claimed responsibility for the strike on Monday. But the Islamic Resistance in Iraq, a coalition of factions including Kataib Hezbollah, said early on Monday that “Over the past 24 hours, the Mujahideen of the Islamic Resistance in Iraq carried out 21 operations using dozens of drones and missiles against the occupation bases in Iraq and the region.”
Iraqi resistance operations also targeted the US Victoria Base near Baghdad Airport, which has been under constant fire in recent days.
A drone attack hit the Al-Rasheed hotel near the US embassy as well.
A spokesman for Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani called for a probe into the “terrorist attacks” and said they carry “serious consequences for our country and undermine the government’s efforts toward reconstruction and development.”
Right after the embassy attack, US airstrikes began pounding Iraq, killing at least four in Baghdad’s Jadriyah district.
Deadly air raids against Iraq have been ongoing since the Iraqi resistance intervened in the war and began striking US targets in response to the brutal US-Israeli campaign against Iran.
US attacks over the weekend resulted in the assassination of Abu Ali al-Askari, Kataib Hezbollah’s senior security commander.
“We announce the martyrdom of Haj Abu Ali al-Askari,” the group announced.
Early on 12 March, airstrikes in Iraq killed dozens of fighters belonging to the Popular Mobilization Units (PMU).
After the initial strikes, aircraft continued to circle the area, launching additional attacks targeting ambulance teams and rescue workers as they attempted to evacuate the wounded from flattened buildings.
