Michigan AI Data Center to Deploy Chinese Humanoid Robots to Replace Human Workers

A Michigan data center is preparing to deploy Chinese humanoid robots as companies continue pushing artificial intelligence (AI) from computer screens into the physical workplace.

Hyperscale Data Inc. and its subsidiary, Omnipresent Robotics, are partnering with Chinese robotics firm Agibot PTE Ltd to obtain components for 30 OPR-R2 humanoid robots, according to Data Center Dynamics.

The robots are expected to be deployed at Hyperscale’s data center in Dowagiac, Michigan, in the third quarter of 2026.

The machines will reportedly be used to support the “development of embodied artificial intelligence applications, autonomous workflows, and advanced robotics systems.”

The announcement comes amid growing concern that companies are not merely using AI to improve software, but to create machines capable of performing tasks currently handled by human workers.

Robots to Train by Mimicking Human Employees

The robots are expected to be assigned to Omnipresent Robotics’ Model Training Laboratory.

There, the machines will reportedly work “side-by-side” with employees while mimicking their movements as part of real-world training.

That setup means workers at the facility could be helping train the same kind of physical AI systems that companies hope will eventually operate more independently.

Once fully trained, the robots will replace the human workers they learned from.

“The company believes the integration of humanoid robots with high-performance AI computing infrastructure will create a unique environment for developing and evaluating next-generation AI systems capable of operating in real-world environments,” Hyperscale said, according to Data Center Dynamics.

Hyperscale’s chairman said the company believes “physical AI” is the future of artificial intelligence.

He said “tomorrow’s AI systems” will need to understand and interact with the physical world.

The OPR-R2 model is not listed on Agibot’s website.

However, Agibot’s top humanoid model, the Agibot A2 Ultra, is about five-and-a-half feet tall and weighs just over 150 pounds.

That model includes three cameras on the head, chest, and waist, along with a microphone and speaker.

Agibot has described its humanoid robots as a “rising star” in the entertainment industry and recommended them for roles such as brand ambassadors and performances.

Chinese-Linked Robots Raise New Questions

The deployment adds another concern to the growing national debate over AI, automation, and Chinese-linked technology.

Companies across the country are rapidly investing in data centers, AI infrastructure, and robotics as they look for ways to reduce costs and expand automation.

Supporters argue that humanoid robots could help companies perform repetitive tasks, improve efficiency, and gather training data for next-generation AI systems.

However, critics warn that the same technology could threaten jobs as machines learn to copy human movements and operate in real-world environments.

The use of components from a Chinese robotics firm also raises security and supply-chain questions at a time when Washington is increasingly focused on Beijing’s role in advanced technology.

Data Center Already Facing Local Backlash

Hyperscale’s Dowagiac facility was already facing local opposition before the robot deployment was announced.

Residents have accused the data center of producing a constant hum from cooling systems and fans.

A class action lawsuit filed in May alleges that the noise from the facility has become overwhelming for nearby homeowners.

Neighbors say they can hear the data center from inside their homes and that the noise has affected how they use their own property.

“I’m walking [my son] more than a mile away to get away from the noise,” one man said, according to WSBT.

The Dowagiac data center is roughly 617,000 square feet and uses about 28 megawatts of power.

According to DataCenters.com, there are 12 other data centers within 50 miles of the facility.

Hyperscale Data was trading at around 17 cents per share at the time of writing.

The company’s robot plan now places the Michigan facility at the center of two growing battles: local resistance to massive AI data centers and national concern over whether human workers are being used to train the machines that could one day replace them.
