Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on 14 October that a US or Israeli strike on Iran before Israel’s 27 October elections would not serve the country, one day after reportedly urging US President Donald Trump to renew attacks against Iran.

“In my opinion, that is not convenient for us,” he told Army Radio, framing his opposition as a matter of national interest.

According to Israeli Channel 12, Netanyahu had pressed Trump to reignite the war on Iran before both Israeli elections on 27 October and the US midterm elections on 3 November.

Netanyahu also told Army Radio that Jewish-supremacist and genocide advocate National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir – leader of the Otzma Yehudit party – will not be appointed war minister if his bloc wins the election.

“I know he wants it, but he doesn’t decide,” Netanyahu said. “Defense will remain in Likud.”

Trump intends to resume bombing after the midterms, the Wall Street Journal reported on 26 September, citing US officials, as he scrambles to drive down fuel prices and shield his party at the polls.

Public approval of Trump’s handling of the war on Iran is collapsing within his own voter base, falling from 73 percent among Republicans in March to 60 percent, according to a CNN/SSRS poll, while three-quarters of US citizens say the war has not been worth its cost.

The USS Theodore Roosevelt carrier strike group, the USS Makin Island amphibious group, and some 9,000 troops are currently en route to West Asia, joining roughly 50,000 US troops already in the region, and potentially bringing the number of US aircraft carriers operating in the region to three.

Having failed to break Iran militarily or topple its government, Washington has turned to a long-term economic siege of naval blockade and sweeping sanctions, which Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has called an “Economic D-Day” aimed at severing Tehran’s financial lifelines and collectively punishing the Iranian population.

Senior US officials, including Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, had privately warned Trump that Iran could keep resisting Washington’s economic and military aggression and outlast its pressure well beyond the end of his presidency in January 2029, the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported on 10 September.
