‘New targets, new weapons, new geography’: Iran warns US, Israel against escalation

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) issued a fresh warning to the US and Israel on 21 September, vowing that any new escalation will be met with an “expansion of the geography” of the war, as well as the use of “new weapons” against “new targets.”

The comments were made by IRGC spokesman Brigadier General Hossein Mohebbi. “Iran is prepared for a prolonged war,” Mohebbi said.

“Any renewed aggression would be met with a significantly different response, including expanding the geography of the conflict” and a “wider war theater.”

He added that “If a new aggression takes place, there will definitely be significant changes in our defense and our counteroffensive.”

“We will definitely bring new weapons with new capabilities into the battlefield, and the world will be surprised,” Mohebbi went on to say. “We will definitely change the geography of the war.”

Mohebbi stressed that a new confrontation will not be limited to the same targets struck by Iranian forces previously.

“Tehran’s [target] objectives would no longer necessarily be limited to those targeted previously. Iran has new targets that have not yet been attacked. Iran has produced a range of weapons both during the war and previously, and their capabilities are being upgraded continuously.”

Some of these “strategic weapons” have not been used yet, he said, while warning that they will be deployed “if necessary.”

Just one day earlier, the Iranian army said it received intelligence that Washington is planning new attacks on Iran, with the backing of regional states.

“We warn that if the US makes any mistake against the Islamic Republic of Iran, all its positions and interests in the region will be targeted by sustained, effective and painful attacks, without any limitations or considerations,” the army stated, while extending warnings to regional countries allied to Washington.

Since Washington’s renewed escalation against the Islamic Republic over recent weeks, including the deadly bombing of a wedding in southern Iran early this month, Tehran has struck multiple US sites across the region repeatedly.

The Strait of Hormuz remains shut to Washington and its allies, coinciding with a Yemeni blockade against Saudi shipping.

Iran has demanded the withdrawal of US troops from the areas surrounding it as part of stalled talks with Washington, as well as a full end to the war and occupation in Lebanon, sanctions removal, release of frozen assets, and continued control over Hormuz in cooperation with Oman.
