President Donald Trump delivered a stark warning to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), urging allied nations to help secure the Strait of Hormuz and cautioning that failure to do so could have serious implications for the alliance.
Speaking in an interview with The Financial Times, Trump said NATO members that rely on the critical shipping route should share responsibility for protecting it.
“It’s only appropriate that people who are the beneficiaries of the Strait will help to make sure that nothing bad happens there,” Trump said.
“If there’s no response, or if it’s a negative response, I think it will be very bad for the future of NATO.”
Trump Reiterates Message Aboard Air Force One
Trump repeated the warning later Sunday while speaking with reporters aboard Air Force One as he returned to Washington, D.C.
“It would be nice to have other countries police that with us, and we’ll help – we’ll work militarily,” Trump said.
The president emphasized that the United States has repeatedly supported NATO allies and expects reciprocal cooperation.
“Remember, like as an example of many cases that NATO countries, we’re always there for NATO,” Trump told reporters.
He pointed specifically to the U.S. role in supporting European security.
“We’re helping them with Ukraine,” Trump said, adding that “between us, it doesn’t affect us.”
“But we’ve helped them,” he continued, echoing remarks he previously made at the United Nations General Assembly, questioning whether NATO allies would “always be there for us.”
Strategic Importance of the Strait
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the most critical maritime chokepoints in the world, carrying a significant share of global oil shipments.
Trump administration officials have emphasized that while the United States is now a net exporter of oil, many NATO allies remain heavily dependent on energy shipments passing through the strait.
Trump said protecting the shipping route should therefore be a shared responsibility.
“It’d be interesting to see what country wouldn’t help us with a very small endeavor, which is just keeping the Strait open,” Trump said.
“That, by comparison, is a small [ask],” he added.
“It’s small because Iran has very little firepower.”
White House Seeking Allied Cooperation
Despite the warning, Trump said discussions with NATO allies have so far produced encouraging responses.
“We are talking to other countries about working with us about the policing of the strait, and I think we’re getting a good response,” Trump told reporters.
“If we do, that’s great – and if we don’t, that’s great.”
Ongoing NATO Tensions Over Defense Spending
Trump has long criticized NATO allies for failing to meet defense spending commitments.
During his first administration, Trump repeatedly pressed member nations to meet the alliance’s target of 2 percent of gross domestic product (GDP) for defense spending.
More recently, U.S. Ambassador to NATO Matt Whitaker said the current Trump administration has pushed allies to commit to 5 percent of GDP for defense spending.
Trump’s latest comments signal that the administration continues to view burden-sharing within NATO as a central issue in U.S. foreign policy.
